Also, he was probably 25 when he was "15".

So pretty much a typical Saturday night for Maradona back in the day?

Don't worry, you are not being crude. You are actually being presumptuous as I'm not from South London. What justified my dismissal of your idea was the fact that it lacked any evidence of critical thought, it was a mass, and erroneous, oversimplification of the problem. For instance, while Girly Sports and I disagree on how to solve the national squad's problem, we both realize that their on-field performance is the issue.

What is frustrating about this from my perspective is that when Canada did have some quality footballers (Bunbury, Peschisolido, Radzinski, Forrest, de Vos) they still couldn't qualify. If I can recall, they breezed through the 1998 World Cup CONCACAF qualification semis with a 5-1 record, only to end up at the bottom of the table with 1 win, including a 4-1 hammering in San Salvador.

Back then (including the '94 campaign) they were good enough to qualify for the World Cup, but did not. Now the talent doesn't seem to be there and developmental programs are not cutting it.

No wonder most Canadian soccer fans have another country that they support in big tournaments.

At least in 1998 they made the final table. I would be happy if they finished last in the final table everytime. That's 10 extra games. Games on tv, people talking about teams like USA and Mexico coming to Canada etc...

These days they're not even close and as you said, people just laugh and go for a bigger team.

I don't think the talent now is that bad. Put a lineup like this together.

(left to right)
Gerba-Friend
De Rosario-De Guzman-De Jong-Hutchinson
Klukowski-Serioux-McKenna-Stalteri
Wagenaar

I think that's a decent team for CONCACAF that a good coach could tactically mold into something

Essien is out of the Ghana squad for the World Cup.
There goes one team's chances up in smoke.

Well, I refuse to take you seriously or get into an academic discussion about the obvious managerial and leadership problem with Canadian soccer. After all this is a hockey site! So i will make it even simpler:

"An Ontario based soccer club rep coach was walking along the beach in San Diego, deep in prayer. Suddenly, the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, the Lord said, "Because you have TRIED to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish."

The club coach said, "Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive over anytime I want."
The Lord said, "Your request is very materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports to the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! It will nearly exhaust several natural resources. I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that would honor and glorify me."

The club coach thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, "Lord, I wish that I could understand the CSA/OSA hierarchy. I want to know why they do what they do."
The Lord replied, "You want two lanes or four on that bridge?""

Too bad about Essien, that will be a crushing blow for Ghana. I really do like the African teams in for this one. I see Spain is without Senna and has to deal with the Torres injury. Senna was outstanding in the Euros. Definitely a blow.

Nobody has said that the program doesn't need serious fixing, in fact that's what we've been saying. What was disputed was the idea that bringing in a mercenary coach would be a serious difference maker, and of course the laughable idea that a lack of diving is the problem.

Where do all the Calgary-based CP users, more specifically England supporters, plan on catching the games?
There is always The Ship and Anchor or sports bars, what else is good?

Somewhat off topic, but probably not new thread worthy:
To the surprise of nobody, Mourinho transfers to Real Madrid for £6.8m.

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,195...177058,00.html

Real Madrid will present Jose Mourinho as the new manager of the Spanish club on Monday.

Real made the announcement on Friday, two days after confirming they had sacked coach Manuel Pellegrini.

Reading alot of the articles, looks like all the teams are training in altitude.
Games in South Africa are expected to be played at around 6000 feet. In additiion, it's the South African winter so it'll be cold, especially the night matches.

Also the new ball is light so will struck with power and will swerve in the thin air.
Could lead to more goals or keeper blunders I hope!

I don't know about cold. It won't be hot, but most matches will likely be at temperatures in the low double digits. Ideal temperatures really.
