Shooting coyotes is a lot harder. There is a lot less shooting and more ripping through fields hanging out the window with a rifle in your hands.

I heard marigolds keep cats away? I plant them in my planters, and in addition to driving away the neighbourhood cats they're EXTREMELY hard to kill. Perfect for a guy like me that would rather eat burgers than water flowers.

If you're going to get a pellet gun buy a .22 cal one (I think this is what a previous poster meant for caliber, not the firearm type). The .177 is not as good, but it depends on the FPS of the rifle and whether its a head shot or not (got skillz?).
Pump action is ok depending on the quality of the rifle (read reviews), CO2 is better, but stay the hell away from spring action (useless).

The best thing you can do when a cat is crapping in your yard is to catch the cat, crap on it and see how IT likes it.
After you have reasoned with it and explained your point, I am sure the cat will change its view.
Either that or get a dog.

Saskatchewan just concluded a bounty program paying out $20 for every dead coyote . . . . . 71,000 dead coyotes later . . . . .
I hope they like the gopher problem they're going to have.

I was reading that yesterday as well on the CBC there, I also thought that was a large number and wonder how and if it would effect the eco system.

And maybe get the real pellet type with pointed tips. Not the spherical BB type. .177 isn't bad if you are running over 400 FPS on C02.
A fully automatic airsoft rifle shooting over 10 balls per second over 400 FPS will also deal out death quite quickly but not humane at all.

The program as it was announced:
http://www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/Coyote-Control
And the result. They're apparently surprised by the "large" number of paws being submitted.

One prescient comment from that story:
Lorne Scott, who is a farmer as well as president of Nature Saskatchewan, said coyotes should only be killed if they're causing problems in specific areas.
"A lot of these coyotes probably were coyotes that were causing no problems with domestic animals and they were probably consuming a lot of Richardson's ground squirrels, which are a problem in some areas," said Scott.
"Biologically it's simply not a good way to manage wildlife. We still maintain that the bounty is non-selective. It removes animals that are actually the farmer's friend. Most coyotes are beneficial to landowners."
Amen. If there are indeed "hundreds of thousands" of coyotes in Saskatchewan and you're removed 71,000, it's logical to assume the rodents they consume will benefit from the absence of predation . . . . . and that the coyote population will rebound strongly within a few years as compensation.
Just a dumb idea in Saskatchewan.

Tens of thousands of coyotes are killed every year in Saskatchewan, it just hasn't been reported until now.
It's not like families from urban areas are making day trips out to the country, guns in hand, and hunting coyotes. The people who were killing the coyotes in the past are the very same people who killed them last year, only difference being that the paws were turned in rather than left in the field/ditch.
