It exists in rugby, maybe not to the same extent as soccer, but it happens.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what the coach can do but rather the players. We shouldn't be content with a squad that needs a great coach to get the desired results. Spain demands a team that can win the World Cup without a great coach and Canada should settle for no less than a team that can qualify for the WCF without a great coach; that should be one of the major aims of our system.

Default Canada should be much better at the top level

I fail to believe that throwing money at a coach would do anything more than waste money in return for a marginally better result.
I think you are putting the cart before the horse, players typically impress at the world cup then get picked up by club teams in europe. After the world cup in Korea/Japan in 2002a bunch of Japanese and Korean players turned up in the EPL. The fact is that although Canada is not a soccer power and will probably never win the WC, they should be able to make it now and then.

After all look at teams like T@T, Jamaica, New Zealand and such! The bottom line is Canada needs to improve there general gamesmanship skills like diving and delaying the game when needed. Canadian teams tend to be badly coached and appear very naive at the top level, these are symptoms of bad team management. We need to begin to play to win like our winter atheletes, lets not forget that Canada was considered a winter olympics loser in 1988. Its time to bring some of the toughness that Canadians display in other sports to the soccer field.

Win with an average coach would take alot of funding which is another issue. I still think coaching at the top level is the key.

Look at Italy the World Champions. Two years later they have Donadoni and they're absolutely lost. Embarassing Euro 2008. Lippi is back now and they should be back in contention. An average coach would be exposed pretty quick no matter how good a team is.

Bollocks. I'm sorry to be crude but I feel you are way off the mark. It's not a matter of our players being willing to throw themselves down in order to draw a foul, do the Aussies and Kiwis do that? When comparing us to nations that we should be able to compete with, you mention countries like T&T and Jamaica. While the structure of our formal systems is more professional than their's, their informal systems of player development are better than our own and complete the job even our formal player development system fails to do; develop footballers.

With a statement like the one above, I'm thinking that you are trying to take a shortcut that might not even get you to your desired destination.

Best of luck man, got back in December from there, and you'll have a blast while you're there. Be sure to check out Camps Bay, and Long St., fantastic locations with a lot to offer! Enjoy, you won't regret!

Well sorry to be crude, but just because your from South London does not make some sort of an authority on this matter. The Kiwis, give me a break! Excellent rugby team but canada would wipe the floor of them in soccer. They qualified through administrative gamesmanship!

Really? NZ is on par with a number of the teams that we can't beat qualifying campaign after qualifying campaign. The last time Canada 'wiped the floor' with anyone it was St. Vincent.

Well sorry, Valo, I am simply not as pessimistic about Canada's chances. When i look at the individuals and the skill sets on the field of play, I simply don;t see the massive differences. However i see serious differences in team play and coaching, and part of that is gamesmanship, but there are other elements. As to diving all of the top teams do it, its always been part of soccer(and these days, hockey too).

France with a typical performance under Domenech

terrible in the 1st half, should have been down by 2 goals but somehow got away with a 1-1

and then some great play in the 2nd half to win, no clue what could happen to this team next month

I could see them winning the whole thing or not winning 1 game

You don't see the massive differences yet Canada would "wipe the floor" with NZ? Really? Explain that.

And if the argument is we're as good as NZ then I guess the solution is to find a way in to Oceania.

As for your diving argument, I'll quote Addick. Bollocks.

If they lose, we can assume that nobody on his team wants to see that.
