So how come Hurley, Kate...were with that final group when they didn't die on the Island?

Don't really know how I feel about that. . . .
Definitely not unhappy.
Pretty sure I'm happy.
No real questions left, though, so that's something.

I don't want to ruin this... Spoilers below.
They were dead all along. That's why Jack laid down in the same spot and closed his eyes. The plane wreckage was shown because no one was alive there. That's why there were Egyptian hieroglyphics, etc., because everyone has passed through there. I thought they had denied this ending? But this explains EVERYTHING. Wow. Just wow.

The final group were those who created that place together so they could find each other, regardless of when or where they arrived.
It was about the fact that they spent that time together and what they meant to each other, not where they were when it was their time.

I need to let that one sink in........
Good on the poster who called the Jack\Hurley twist.
My initial reaction is that the writers intention came through with this finale. Everything about the island and all the crazy stuff is completely secondary. It has never been about the island,
It has and was always meant to be about the characters.
Fantastic

That's not it at all.
If it was, the relationships created after the crash wouldn't have mattered

Yeah you're completely right about that. That's why it's just good for me and not great. I never really got into any of the characters like I have with other shows and to have the series not be about the island bums me out.

Spoilers below.....
I had a different take than HPLovecraft - I'm not sure what is right. My thought was that it all did happen and that they all did survive the crash. But the recent flash sideways things of their lives had the plane safely landed was all fake - it was something that was created by their minds after they died so that they could all find each other in the afterlife. Like - Jack's father said - they all died sometime - some long after Jack and some before. So once all of them had died they created this perfect world so that they could find each other in the afterlife. So essentially - everything that happened on the island, actually happened. We don't know what happened after Jack died and before the remaining alive ones died - presumably, Ben and Hurley protected the island, Kate/Sawyer/Clare etc all got off on the airplane that Lapidus flew and lived whatever lift. Then when they all died they found each other in this perfect 'reality'

The more I think about it, the more I agree with this. How come there was no Walt and his kid in the afterlife party?

Hmm, but why did Ben tell Hurley that people not being able to leave the Island was Jacob's doing. Hurley could do it differently. That led me to believe he created the little place in heaven, or wherever, I suppose it's no place, since he was the new "Jacob." That's why they weren't all stuck on the island in Whisper form.
God damn it, I'm going to have to let it sink in and watch it again.

Ya and to pick up on that, the producers had mentioned that Jack was always meant to be the "Hero" or the "Protagonist".
That was the case with his actions throughout the series but also the series itself followed Jacks life, from the moment his eye opened in episode one to the moment his eye closed in the finale. Others died earlier and, others continued on but the series followed the life of Jack.

I could honestly never get into this show, but I have to ask:
Can anyone give me a cliff-notes version of the last episode, please? I've read through this thread, but it's more confusing than the show
