Default Bicycling in Banff

I'm thinking of heading to Banff sometime soon, maybe even this weekend. My wife and I aren't avid cyclists, but we do go for the the odd ride every now and then.

Can anyone recommend any "easy" rides in the Banff area? We're probably going to putz around town for a bit too, but it would be nice to hear your first-hand suggestions for something relatively flat, not too technical, etc.

Yes, I said "flat" and "Banff" in the same post. And go ahead and call me lazy, but I'm looking for something that will be a nice leisurely activity for myself, and in particular, my wife.

The last time I was on a bicycle in Banff was in junior high school after we had finished a trek from Jasper. I would die if I attempted that now.

There's a nice ride that takes you from the Banff Springs on the back road through the golf course. Fairly flat and a nice view of the course.

For non-technical, Goat Creek Trail. It goes all the way to Canmore/Spray Lakes Road. People usually ride from Canmore to Banff because you lose 1000ft in elevation...however it is 18km one way. It comes out near the golf course in Banff. I've cross country skied this one new years eve.

But if you don't want that, I'd just start at the golf course, ride out a couple of km, and turn around. (this is probably the same trail that JBR mentioned)

Spray lakes loop. It's a good path. Bring your lunch for a picnic at the mid point.

Sundance is dead easy. Bring a lock with you and do the climb at the end. Good view.

You can also get a route guide from the park office.

From Banff Springs up the Spray River to Canmore is not too difficult a ride.

Spray River and Goat Creek

19 km one way, elevation gain 360 m, moderate Trailhead: Banff Springs Hotel This popular double-track follows an old fire road for 10 km to the junction with Goat Creek (turn left). It then ascends gently along Goat Creek below Mount Rundle to a parking lot on the Smith-Dorrien Road above Canmore. Most riders arrange a vehicle shuttle and reverse the trip for a gentle downhill cruise.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. The forecast looks like crap for tomorrow, but maybe I'll postpone until Sunday. Either way I'll be putting all of these tips to use in the near future. "Mrs. Stang" thanks you all as well!

It's still early in the year, so I suppose there could be snow in some places.
