How to remove rust spots on cars?

So I have a few rust spots from rock chips on the hood of my car and I'm wondering how you can remove those spots? I've heard you need to solubilize the rust, and then put touch up paint over it.

Not a body shop expert... but the old fashioned way would seem to work pretty good...


Sand, prime, paint.

Sand, Prime with Zinc Chromate Spray or Epoxy Primer, Primer Surfacer, Block Sand, Sealer, Paint, Clearcoat.

Not to derail but does anyone know how to remove a little paint? Some dbags bumped my cars in parking lots and left a few small streaks of yellow paint on my grey car. What can I do to get rid of them myself? Thanks

Try using a clay bar. You can buy one from Canadian tire.

Those McDonald barriers get me all the time

Go to your local paint store and pick up something called "goof-off"

It will do the trick.

I'm pretty sure goof off is just mineral spirits in a fancy can. I wouldn't put a solvent on my paint.

I've used rubbing compound (not polish) and it worked great. You just likely have to polish it afterwards.

It's just a dilluted form of paint thinner but it shouldn't ruin the paint. I've used it before on my paint and had no problems. It wont be strong enough to reach the actual paint of your vehicle.

I've used a magic eraser for the very same thing. Worked like a charm, but rub lightly or it'll work like a charm through the car's paint too!

Rub the rust out with acetone and use touchup paint

IMO the only way to get rid of surface rust on a car is to use Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound. Stuff works unbelievable. I use it in conjunction with touch up paint,

Turtlewax has so much silicone in it just like armor all its not that good for your vehicle finish. If you can get to a bodyshop supplier (cmax) there is a rubbing compound called Farecla. Its either machine use or just with a cloth. Spray a little water on it and it gets coarser. Great stuff and not bad for price. It will get rid of scuffs and light rust bleeding. Unless you want to do the whole outside of your car than id recomend gettin someone who has access to the 3M multi stage polishing system. Makes cars look very shiny.
