Gulping water usually does the trick for me
Hiccups are caused by the difference in timing between your diaphragm and lungs. By swallowing/holding your breath/etc, you involuntarily stop breathing momentarily and the timing correct itself. Most of the time that is

Try drinking upside down. Just sip some water and hold it in your mouth and bend down with the crown of your head facing the ground and swallow. Repeat 3 or 4 times.

my grade 6 teacher would tell us to hold our breath for 20 minutes.
If we could do that we would no longer have the hiccups, we'd be dead mind you but no hiccups

This.
Works every single time for me. I usually count and get to 30-40 before exhaling.

If someone has the hiccups, get right in their face and yell at them, asking why they have hiccups and keep going and being obnoxious about it. They will get confused and the hiccups shoudl go away. My wife's boss did that to her and it worked really well.

At least it would get you guys to be quiet. Which is I'm sure what your teacher was really after.

I think it was last year when I went over a week with hiccups. It was the worst.
I tried all that stuff you guys mentioned and it did nothing. I had to let them run their course, hating my life every minute of the day.
