Default Where to stay in Ottawa?

I'm looking into going up to Ottawa for a friend's wedding in July (the 10th to be exact) and I need a place to stay for one night.

I don't need anything fancy, just someone to drop a small bag and grab a few hours sleep.

Hotwire has a hotel in the East End of Ottawa for $59. Just wondering if anyone knows of any motels that might be cheaper?

It'll be a flight in on Saturday, attend the wedding/reception, then flight out on Sunday.

Suggestions?

We stayed here for a few days, nothing too fancy but the location was perfect.

Very close to Byward market and walking distance to shops, pubs, museums and what not.

Less than that I would think; you can drive there in 1.5 - 2 hrs.

Mmm... Montreal road.... great place to be if you "like to party" and enjoy take out from the scuzzy strip club.

There are a lot of motels on Montreal road that charge by the hour....

If you want something downtown, the best you are going to get is $100.
If you can go out from downtown, I would suggest going west. Carling avenue for example. Travelodge, Comfort Inn, a few others can be had for $80. But you won't find anything decent for $60 I'm afraid.

Well the wedding reception is west, I'd like to spend as little as possible on the hotel as I'm not spending any time there other than to sleep and drop off a bag.

East Ottawa is sketch-ville eh? If that's the case I'll shell out the extra couple of bucks.

It seems the Priceline/Hotwire route will be the best way to find something. I was hoping to find a mom & pop motel or something, like the Bates Motel, only I'm a dude so no iconic shower scene.

I've stayed here... its cheap and in a good location...

It says B&B but its a hotel... they have free breakfast. Says $79 on their website... I think I got it for $59 on hotwire.

Cheaper than $59? Skid Row?

Try this (in Kanata, where NHL teams stay):

Ironically that IS where the reception is taking place. But the wedding party rate is like $170/night or something I can't afford.

Unfortunately the wedding itself is downtown. Which makes not only getting into Ottawa a trick, but also getting around Ottawa.

If the reception is in Kanata, I'd look for a hotel out there. There's a Country Inn just down the street from Scotiabank Place that's pretty nice. The cab fare into downtown would be pretty high, I suspect.

I'd think that if you can Priceline or Hotwire a good price anywhere in Kanata, you shouldn't end up anywhere too bad.

That's a crap location for someone coming in from out of town because public transit to there sort of sucks.

Definitely don't get the hotel room on Hotwire for East Ottawa. IF you can get a room on Hotwire or Priceline for Kanata, you'd be best off. Otherwise, try for the Holiday Inn Express in Kanata. It's right next to a transit station that will take you directly downtown. Plus it wouldn't be that much of a cab ride back from Brookstreet or close enough that maybe someone would give you a ride back.

There is a very nice hostel not far from Byward Market, I don't remember what it is called but it was just about the cosiest I've stayed in anywhere in the world (cosy in the home-ish sense, not in the cramped sense).

Yeah, I agree with the above. Go West young man, go west. If the reception is in Kanata, I would stay there. Don't cab all the way to downtown - that would be quite expensive - just take transit there. If you take one of the dedicated buses on the Transit Way (i.e. basically roads that only the busses can go on) you would be more than fine. The transit way goes right through the main part of downtown, likely near where you would need to go - all for only a couple of bucks. The transit site - http://www.octranspo1.com/splash - has a trip planner you can use. Its quite easy.

As an aside, here is a rough taxi cost calculator for you to use. I think it really only works in Internet Explorer, however, but it is good to give you an idea of a cab ride cost in the city: http://www.taxime.ca/

Yeah Kanata is a long way from downtown. I remember having a few beers once before catching the bus to a Sens game... never experienced bladder pain like that before or since.
