Insight in Bryan Cameron
Hey folks,
I recently conducted a brief interview with Brock Otten, who runs the OHL Prospects blog. He's a guy who watches a lot of OHL hockey and had some decent things to say about Cameron in the past.
Basically, I wanted to get a feel for what kind of player Cameron is and why he was available as an overager despite boasting some pretty decent results. Otten's responses were interesting. For example, he says Cameron scores a lot of his goals by mucking in front of the net, which is tough role for a guy who is only 5'10".
Anyways, the rest of the interview is here is you're interested:

Since I don't get to view the Flames OHL prospects very often, I plan to talk to Otten again about Brodie and Nemisz this summer

Sounds to me that he may have something of the same problem as Gilbert Brule. Not exactly the same of course but Brule has had trouble adapting his physical junior game to the pros because of his size. Still the signing looks good because you can't teach goal scoring ability and I like this statement
Quote:
He may not be tall, but he has excellent lower body strength which allows him to cycle the effectively.
|
, so he won't be falling on his butt like Boyd.

Hmm, he says he is an opportunist but doesn't really create chances/plays on his own. That's too bad because that's the problem with the Flames. We have too many opportunitists and no playmakers.

I like the fact they seem to have gone out of their comfort zone somewhat with this signing. The flames need to start giving guys with his skill set a chance and begin to move towards some high risk/reward players if they are going to start developing top level talent imo. Outside of backlund and wahl (maybe nemisz) i don't see much top six potential in the stables.

You don't sign overage OHL players to plug holes on current NHL clubs though.

Thanks to Metro Gnome. I really enjoyed the article. Looking forward to others in the future!
i agree with most of the other posters; the flames have got to get out of the comfort zone with the grinder type; yes, we have seen some players drafted but we really need to see the players that can put the puck in the net...not just stop the others.
i'm excited for the signing because you can't have enough guys competing to get up to to the flames from the farm. of course, now they have to be given the chance...but that's another thread.

to make an analogy, looks like a lower profile Brandon Kozun. Both players passed over in one draft; both selected by the Kings; both near the top or lead their respective leagues in a major scoring category; both skilled and undersized
nice to get one for free

If the Flames are looking for more overagers to sign out of the OHL they should take a look at Kitchener captain Dan Kelly. Very solid stay at home uy who's one of the best defensive d men in the OHL. not the tallest guy at 6'1", but really thick and thinks the game very well. He is a real warrior and a was a great captain both on and of the ice for the Rangers.
Another interesting guy is Jordan Skelet, who is a pretty good playmaker from Saginaw.

Otten did a post on the top 10 overagers in the OHL this year and both Skelet (7) and Kelly (5) made the list. His comments on both mirror yours pretty closely. Both sound like worthy targets.

I gotta say that there aren't many times I disagree with Brock's assessment. After watching Kelly a lot over this post season, I have to think that he should be bumped up a couple spots the guy was playing close to 35 minutes a game and was the unsung hero that helped push Kitchener deeper than most had them going. I thought he really contributed to shutting down Kadri when it came to crunch time in that series. Too bad the whole team just ran out of gas.

How's his skating? Obviously the one game I saw of him isn't enough to judge, but it looked sub par (which would explain why he's a free agent).

I've never heard this being a problem of his. It was always a size to game style that was the hinderance to his future.

Any chance Cameron has Langkow upside?
Pretty similar in stature and Langkow scores alot of his goals by getting to the net and battling for loose pucks. Sounds like their games are very similar except for Lanks being a center.

Langkow was a dominant WHL player though, posting 140 points as a 19 year old. So if Cameron is a Langkow like player, he'd have to be considered a lesser man's version.

Good point.
I guess that's why Langkow was a high first rounder, and Cameron was a third rounder.
I'd take a "Langkow light" out of a junior free agent signing though.
Heck, I'd take a "Langkow extra light".
