although I don't like Upson at all, Capello has always picked him
Shawcroft will most likely be in the 30 as well, but I don't see him making the 23
Soccernet has Capello bringing Jamie Carragher back into the fold as backup to RB Glen Johnson and additional CB cover. Interesting as Carragher had retired from the international scene three years ago.
kinda funny that Guiseppi Rossi who chose to play for Italy instead of the US and now he won't even get to go (barring injuries), he is also on the cover of this months ESPN the magazine billed as "America's best hope" for the World Cup
Good! I hope he never gets to play for Italy. He would of started for US since Davies went down, but I don't think he would have gotten the nod over a healthy Davies.

thats a huge boost, I read something a few weeks ago that Capello was really trying to persuade him to come out of retirement for the world cup
They really have no backup for Johnson, I would prefer Carragher over Johnson as well to start since they are all ready going to have a winger on the right side they need a better defensive presence instead of offensive at RB
And with Rio and Ledley both having potential injury problems its always good to have another player on the roster who can slide in at CB

GOALKEEPERS - Joe Hart (Manchester City), David James (Portsmouth), Robert Green (West Ham United)
DEFENDERS - Leighton Baines (Everton), Jamie Carragher (Liverpool), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Michael Dawson (Tottenham Hotspur), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Ledley King (Tottenham Hotspur), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham United), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa)
MIDFIELD - Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham Hotspur), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur), James Milner (Aston Villa), Scott Parker (West Ham United), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City)
STRIKERS - Darren Bent (Sunderland), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Peter Crouch (Tottenham Hotspur), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa)
One of Walcott and SWP makes the team, most likely Walcott Capello seems to love him
I think the 7 cuts will be
Warnock, Upson, Adam Johnson, Parker, SWP, Bent, Barry
I don't expect Barry to be fit, if he is than Carrick or Huddlestone will be cut, based on this years form it should be Carrick but I would guess Huddlestone
I would have Bent on the team as well but they don't need a 5th striker because Gerrard has played and excelled in the role of secondary striker with Liverpool. And Capello loves the target man (Crouch/Heskey) to go with the scorer (Rooney/Defoe) so he only needs 2 of each, and Defoe's game is also more productive as an impact sub if needed.
As I said Capello loves Walcott otherwise I wouldn't have him on the team, I think SWP is the odd man out there. And I think he goes with Joe Cole over Johnson because of experience and more versatility.
I don't think Agbonlahor fits the formation Capello runs, he would only really be useful as a winger as he isn't big enough and doesn't finish enough to play up front. Ashley Young is a bit of a surprise omission but Adam Johnson has been in better form the last month

Brazil Named their 23-Man Roster today, with some notable omissions. No Pato, Diego, Ronaldinho, or Neymar on the roster today. To me personally this squad is not as strong as past Brazilian teams.
Goalkeepers - Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Doni (AS Roma), Gomes (Tottenham Hotspur)
Defenders – Maicon (Inter Milan), Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Michel Bastos (Olympique Lyon), Gilberto (Cruzeiro), Lucio (Inter Milan), Juan (AS Roma), Luisao (Benfica), Thiago Silva (AC Milan)
Midfielders - Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos), Felipe Melo (Fiorentina), Ramires (Benfica), Elano (Galatasaray), Kaka (Real Madrid), Julio Baptista (Roma), Kleberson (Flamengo), Josue (VfL Wolfsburg).
Also Italy named their provisional squad today, which is different then the squad announced Tuesday last week for the training camp. That squad last week did not feature any foreign players or players who had played in the Italian Cup.
Italy provisional squad:
Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Morgan De Sanctis (Napoli), Federico Marchetti (Cagliari), Salvatore Sirigu (Palermo)
Defenders: Gianluca Zambrotta (AC Milan), Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Christian Maggio (Napoli), Leonardo Bonucci (Bari), Fabio Grosso (Juventus), Domenico Criscito (Genoa), Mattia Cassani (Palermo), Salvatore Bocchetti (Genoa)
Midfielders: Andrea Pirlo (Milan), Gennaro Gattuso (Milan), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina), Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria), Antonio Candreva (Juventus), Andrea Cossu (Cagliari), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Simone Pepe (Udinese)
Forwards: Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli), Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Marco Borriello (Milan), Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina), Giampaolo Pazzini (Sampdoria).
Sadly I do not think that this team will be capable of a repeat of 2006 but I will still be cheering for them every step of the way. I wish that Cassano and Aquilani would have been given a shot to play at the World Cup but no dice.
I'd much rather see Johnson on the team than Walcott or Cole. Walcott was awful this year.
Walcott has been awful forever but he always gets picked, if he played at a team where he was good enough to start at (i.e West Ham) he wouldn't get picked
Johnson was good but it young and also couldn't ever make it 90 minutes in a game, his stamina is an issue
I think Cole gets picked because he can play both sides and up front, and he has always been great for England

I'd like to have Johnson as a sub. The guy has good pace coming off the bench, and has the ability to take set pieces and cross the ball into the box.

Not a Walcott fan by any means but anyone who can do this is not all bad. That was quality:
I'm surprised Capello went out of his way to pull Carra out of retirement. Especially considering that by most people's standards he had a pretty mediocre to poor season.

He's versatile and is good cover for RB and CB. He's always excellent in the dressing room. He will be a perfect fit as a squad player at the finals.
I'm delighted that he accepted to go. England came calling due to injuries and he answered the call. Typical Carra. Lot of respect for that guy.
