I played around a bit with my friends iPad last night. A really nice machine that is simply a good device to sit in the living room and use. Typing didn't seem to be too hard. Can't wait until I can get one of my own.

So the 10th is supposedly the day for preordering or getting pricing info is it not? Has anybody heard an update on this or do we just have to wait? I'm curious if they'll let Canadians do the per-order pick up that the US customers got. I want to order online but I also don't know if i want to trust Canada Post to get it to me. They don't even knock on my door, they just put the damn "sorry we missed you!" door-handle hanger and walk away.

Usually Apple ships via UPS or FedEx (I can’t remember which, I think it was FedEx).

And what do you mean you’re not taking the day off that its scheduled to arrive at your house?

Yeah, they use both FedEx and UPS. FedEx mostly for warranty things, in my experience.

My wife was home the last time I needed something shipped to the house. She actually watched the SOB walk up to the door (empty handed), write on the paper, hang it on the doorknob and walk back to his truck.

I get stuff shipped to my work now as there's always somebody there to accept the package.

Prices:
$549 - 16GB WiFi
$649 - 32GB WiFi
$749 - 64GB WiFi

$679 - 16GB 3G
$779 - 32GB 3G
$879 - 64GB 3G

$50 more than the Americans. I was hoping for $30 more, but I guess this will do. Thankfully not $100 more like many were expecting.

I'm going for 32 gig 3G. Who's with me?

$50 more than the Americans was my guess for Canadian pricing.

I still want to hold one in my hands (preferable outside on a sunny day) before I buy one. But I would go with the base model 16GB WiFi, which with taxes keeps it under $600.

I'm gonna wait and see what Robbers is going to charge for the data plan before I decide 3G or not.

Pretty much ya. After having constant access for the last 2 years to 3G, suddenly not having it was irksome. Plus I plan to be using it heavily on the train.

I'm quite happy with the Wifi + MyWi. Screw Robbers. Screw 'em with a chimney brush.

I'm playing Sparkle HD on the iPad whenever I'm on the bus. I'm very much looking forward to playing RPGs on this thing but nobody has had the time to put together a decent one thus far. Square has suggested that they will get Chaos Rings to the iPad "sometime in the future". I have toyed with the idea of buying the iPhone one and playing in 2x view, but I'd rather play it with the better graphics, so I'll wait. I went through gamespot's "Top 20 games" and Gizmodo's "Mega-App Review" articles, but nothing there struck my fancy other than Sparkle. I'm not into FPS games or simulation games (racing, flight, etc). I like RTS (Starcraft) or puzzle games (Bejewelled, Professor Layton) or RPGs. The Gizmodo article says C&C proves that an RTS can work well on the iPad, but needed more time in the polishing.

I debated going the mywi route, but I don't like not having the latest firmwares and having to rely on my iPhone battery for my connection. I'm willing to spend a few extra hundred dollars for ease of use.

Update: Canadians are getting the iBookstore

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/05/07/inter...ost-countries/

Very pleased with this. Sure it might be a little overpriced and lacking a few features, but it's great having both the amazon kindle app and the iBooks app available. Plus the free previews are fantastic (I think some of KTrain's were upwards of 40 pages).

I'm willing to pay the extra $100 for the 3G iPad. I'm unwilling to pay $30 per month to Rogers for service. Plus I carry around 5 spare battery packs for when I'm going for a long drive and am playing Own This World.

*IF* Rogers allows sharing of a reasonably priced data plan, then I'll consider selling this one and buying a 3G. But that's about as likely as the Rogers Blue Jays winning the World Series this year.

Looks like Orange over in Europe announced their data plans and they don't look half bad.

By my math (and feel free to correct) that's $0.07 per MB of general usage or you can buy a single day "pass" for $3. $11.50 for a week, $23 for a month of 3 gigs or $38 for a month of 10 gigs.

That's not half bad but does Europe typically have better data plans than North America? The 250 mb deal that the Americans get ($15) would cost roughly $17, so it seems pretty comparable. I wonder how Canada will stack up. I have to expect we'll hear news of Canadian data plans before monday. I'll still preorder a 3G not knowing the Canadian data plans, but I'll probably hit the "confirm" button with a shaky finger.
