If- and that is a big if- their story is true that they were caught dumping grass clippings in a place that is sometimes used as a yard waste disposal site; and there were already lots of garbage bags piled up in that same place..... that changes quite a bit.
Pretty hard to tell from that less than objective Sun article.

The way they hopped in the truck and skidaddled the hell out of there suggests to me they weren't exactly sure this was a cool thing to do. I highly doubt they thought this was perfectly acceptable. Even if there was a bag or two sitting there before hand, there are NO signs saying DUMP YOUR CRAP here.
Give me a break you couple of old farts.

Yeah, Michael Platt has his mind made up that he's going to make this out to be nothing short of an atrocity to sell papers. You could tell in his follow up article today that he's sensationalizing this to the fullest. I realize that's his job, but it would be nice, like you said, to get a more balanced account.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not saying this removes all guilt from them. They should not have done what they did; it's still illegal dumping.
I'm trying to think of an analogy that isn't going to come back and bite me; but here goes. What they were alleged to have done orignally is like finding out your neighbour got busted for drugs and the word around the block is that he was selling crack and meth to junior high kids; and then finding out that he got a summons for having 1/2 a joint in his cigarette pack.

You must be one of those crazy environmental people. I watched the video and it didn't seem like they were in a huge rush to get out of there. Not to mention they were doing it in the middle of the day. I think if they actually thought they were illegally dumping they would wait till dark?

So in this case were saying ignorance is actually a benefit to these old people, but normally we'd immediately jump on anyone else claiming ignorance?

Crazy environmentalist because I give a $hit that somebody dumped a pile of crap in one of the city's nicest parks. Ok bud....call it what you want I suppose.
They sure weren't sticking around to help the next truck unload their grass clippings were they?
They did it mid-day because the old farts are probably in bed at 8 o' clock.

If it was grass clippings as claimed, would you still feel the same way?
I mean I get that dumping garbage is a problem, believe me where i reside dumping is a huge problem, but a bag of freshly mowed lawn? Not as big a deal as rotting egg shells and rancid meat.

Apparently the city actually did allow dumping of grass clippings in that spot in the past and the neighbourhood commonly had thought the right to continue that practice was still intact, hence the advice from a neighbour to go ahead. The neighbour was also engaged in the practice. The neighbour went on the record backing up his story.
So . . . . in the end, he's actually got a pretty good story.
It might not stop him from being fined but I guess, unfortunately, he's not a pedophile.

Have you smelled a bag of "fresh" grass clippings after a few days baking in the sun?

I wonder if Michael Platt will do a follow-up to semi-apolagize for making them out to be the worst POS's since Hitler. More than likely he'll just forget about it and move on to the new minor issue that is worse than starving children in Africa in his mind.

They should be banned from the village and forced to live in the wilderness for a year.
The wife actually looked a bit reluctant in this whole thing. That's mean that her husband drags her along on these illegal dumping trips.

So the guy "looks" guilty and the wife "looks" like she wasn't a willing participant?
I'm starting to get a little nervous about my low criminal forehead and close-set eyes.

What is the by law currently? Thats the only thing that matters. Whether it was allowed in the past or not doesnt matter.
If the Sun reported the story without knowing the bylaw then its on them for bad reporting. If the bylaw states no dumping then the old people or any people caught dumping are doing so illegally. Whether they were allowed to do it in the past doesnt matter. I would love to drive 110km past that eyesore ballsack mall but the speed has changed, if I did drive the old speed I doubt I would get much sympathy if I got a speeding ticket.
Considering our weather I would be very surprised that if all it is was grass clippings.

If they dumped illegally then there is no apology necessary. It doesnt matter what the law was, it matters what the law is now.

Ok...if their story is 100% legit, then fine. Plead ignorance and move on.
I personally don't care if it were bags of fluffy stuffed animals, rancid kitchen waste, or grass clippings. It's still someone elses trash. Regardless of what was in the bags, they were too incompetent to deal with it on their own and decided to make it someone else's problem. That's really the core issue here in my opinion.
It looks to me now like they knew at some point it was a temporary place to dump yard waste. The neighbor told them where to go. They get there, don't see any signs, but figure what the hell, get rid of it here anyway. They may not have, but more than likely knew it was illegal to dump it at this time of year seeing as there were no signs or indications what to do.
Screw it...make it someone elses problem. On top of being an eyesore, that's the problem I have regardless of what's in the bags.
