Not so fast finny, I'm pulling for brazil since they are the favorites and I have always cheered for them since I was a kid. Plus, canada won't contend for some time so in the interim I go with tradition. They will have a great match with Portugal, but I am patient and confident.
I could stand to see italy win it but I count England and France in that category as well. Isn't Wayne injured? I agree he has had a good season.
Spain is a good choice but I am not pulling for those racist b@$t@r&$. At least hate everyone equally.
Secretly, I'd like an african nation to make it far because I like the defensively tough physical style they play, DDrogba, and what happened to Togo.

After being in Africa for the final draw, I have to go with the hometown heroes (I know they don't stand much chance with Mexico and France) or the Ivory Coast. Have to love the home crowd, the stadium in Capetown is something to see, and an amazing country - wish them all the best.

The provisional Germany squad for South Africa 2010 is:
Goalkeepers: Hans-Jorg Butt, Manuel Neuer, Tim Wiese
Defenders: Per Mertesacker, Heiko Westermann, Philipp Lahm, Jerome Boateng, Andrea Beck, Arne Friedrich, Serdar Tasci, Marcell Jansen, Holger Badstuber, Dennis Aogo.
Midfielders: Michael Ballack, Sami Khedira, Piotr Trochowski, Marko Marin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Christian Trasch, Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos.
Forwards: Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Stefan Kiessling, Cacau, Thomas Muller, Mario Gomez.
Looks pretty good, other than the fact that I hate Mario Gomez!

Portugal fans calling others arrogant. That's classic.

That is a very strong team, they are being overlooked a bit but they have a good team and a pretty good draw
if they win their group which they should they most likely play one of the US/Slovenia, after that it gets a little harder (Argentina potentially) but its a nice run in to the quarters if they win their group
I think Ozil is going to have a big coming out party as well, good chance to be the young star of the tournament

Germany always gets overlooked a little bit, but I think thats more because they're assumed to be a quality side.
It just goes to show how skewed the World Rankings are, people always fellate teams like England and Portugal and overlook Germany despite the fact that Portugal has done nothing since losing in 2004 and England hasnt done anything since my Grandfather was a young boy while Germany has played in the WC final in 02, 3rd in 06 and the Euro Cup Final in 08.
Theres a few surprises in there like Muller and Badstuber, but anyone watching the Champions League has seen those two and they are very impressive. Very young but already solid first team players for a team in the CL final.

Germany and Italy are never impressive in qualifying or even the group stage for that matter. This hurts their FIFA Ranking which they don't really care about.
But get to the business end of a big tournament and they are the two toughest teams to knock out. Italy hasn't lost a knockout game in the World Cup or European Championships in regular time since 1988!

ya and they have been dominating the youth tournaments lately as well
plus they have guys like Podolski who always find that next level when playing for his country, the future looks very bright for them, and this year has a nice mix of old and young guys

Germany has dominated their qualifying in the recent past, Italy has had troubles, but Germany didn't lose in WC qualifying and only lost once in Qualifying for Euro 2008
they are one of the teams that really crushes lesser competition

Reminds me of a quote by Johan Cruijff when he claimed that "bad tournaments are always won by the Germans." Not sure how they do it, but they are always there in the mix. That 2008 European Championship team was hands down the worst German team I have seen in my lifetime. Poor across the back, disorganized in mid-field (unthinkable for the Kr*uts) and lackluster up front. Having said that they did make the final.

Italy name their provisional squad
Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Morgan De Sanctis (Napoli), Federico Marchetti (Cagliari), Salvatore Sirigu (Palermo)
Defenders: Salvatore Bocchetti (Genoa), Leonardo Bonucci (Bari), Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus), Mattia Cassani (Palermo), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Domenico Criscito (Genoa), Fabio Grosso (Juventus), Nicola Legrottaglie (Juventus), Christian Maggio (Napoli), Gianluca Zambrotta (AC Milan)
Midfielders: Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Antonio Candreva (Juventus), Andrea Cossu (Cagliari), Gennaro Gattuso (Milan), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina), Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria), Simone Pepe (Udinese), Andrea Pirlo (Milan)
Forwards: Marco Borriello (Milan), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus), Giampaolo Pazzini (Sampdoria), Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli).
Add Danielle De Rossi to the list as well most people think
kinda funny that Guiseppi Rossi who chose to play for Italy instead of the US and now he won't even get to go (barring injuries), he is also on the cover of this months ESPN the magazine billed as "America's best hope" for the World Cup

its the 30 man squad though, has to go down to 23 by the beginning of June
saw a thing where he all ready said Ledley King will be on the 30 man squad, and I think you can infer from that he will be on the 23 man as well. He is right now the most in form English CB

He'd be an idiot to leave Dawson out. If King is the most in form, then Dawson is right behind him.

ya I think they probly bring 5 CB's
Terry, Rio, Dawson, King, Upson
although I don't like Upson at all, Capello has always picked him
Shawcroft will most likely be in the 30 as well, but I don't see him making the 23

Teams I like, for largely incomprehensible reasons:
Mexico
Uruguay
Argentina
Greece
England
USA
Algeria
Ghana
Paraguay
Brazil
Korea DPR (underdog factor, not totalitarian sympathies)
Ivory Coast
Spain
Switzerland
Chile
I am most partial to Switzerland because of my mom's ancestry, England because I lived there and I like it, USA because it would be good for MLS, especially if the MLS players that are called up do really well. Algeria because, I don't know, this Algerian dude made me a great shawarma once. Spain because they play awesome soccer. Greece because I got really drunk and ate a lot of souvlaki when they won the 2004 Euro Cup.
Really, I'll be neutral during most of it. Should be fun!
