In WWII the threat was very real and if you ask any vet would he volunteer the answer would be an astounding yes.
If someone offered me a chance to go anywhere back in time over the last 100 years I would ask for a gun with 2 bullets and return to 1939 to dispose of Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Hitler.
As far as the "war on terror". ask any family who lost someone in 9-11 if they think it's "bull crap"
Had it not been for this "bull crap" war us Canadian's may have lost the CN Tower among other things to terrorism.
Well this is just classic. Fox News based education at tis finest.

I'd rather learn Pashto and join the Taliban than volunteer for the Second War of British Supremecy. Germany had a legitimate beef over Gdansk and the Polish corridor which was 90 % German. The only reason we fought that war was because Britain couldn't stand being second fiddle in Europe, which they ended up being anyways when all was said and done.
Problem is Russia would never even try a land war with China, China has twice as many active troops and 5 times more reserve troops available, they would stomp Russia in a week.
Russia has a larger airforce but with mostly "aged" equipment nowdays so I wouldn't even give them much of an advantage there either.
I was just trying to think of a hypothetical, I doubt very much that the Russians would want to do anything against China, even though they were constantly fighting border skirmishes during the cold war.
They really don't like each other.

You have to remember that during World War II, there was no visual news coverage of things happening. What you knew about the war was from word of mouth, over the radio, or reading it in the news paper. Therefore People did not have the visual impact of war and death. I'm not saying it would be easier to join or not join, but it would easily influence a decision. I believe now a days people are raised to be scared. Men and women in the early 1900s where far braver then the majority of people these days who only care about them selves and making money and not their families and people in general.
There was also a great threat of the Nazis bombing North America. When Pearl Harbor was bombed that was a huge sign the war could soon be brought onto North American soil.
therefore before I rant on, yes I would volunteer if there was a threat to my country.

Maybe I would volunteer to fight their leaders, but not the average soldiers who are often indoctrinated and are regular decent folk just protecting their country.

There actually was visual news coverage of the war in the form of news reels at movie theatres. Of course what was shown was heavily edited, full of propaganda and definitely not live. You're right though that it is quite different from the age of the internet.

I think it's hard for us today to imagine the fear that the rest of the world felt at the time of the Nazi regime. I'm sure people absolutely felt that if the Nazi's weren't stopped it wouldn't be long until they were rounding up and killing people in your hometown.
I think of it this way, say some unfriendly Aliens were threatening to invade/destroy Earth, and the only way you could help prevent that is joining up to the military and heading off the invasion (Starship Troopers anyone?).

Wow, the educational system on your planet really failed you.

I think if the cause was just I would join. I'm 32 with two kids now and it would be because of them that I'd go. Knowing that I could help keep them safe would be my motivation. Also a free trip to Europe would be hard to pass up.
This is the reason I would join too. I'm 30 and have three kids. I would use my family as motivation for fighting Nazis.
My family is also from Poland. I was actually born there. I have heard countless stories from my grandfather who was about 8 or 9 when the Nazis invaded Poland. He has told me many horrific tales about what happened during that time and I would without hesitation do what I could to stop that from happening to my kids.

You would rather join the Taliban? That's a joke right?
If what you are stating was indeed the case, why would the Nazis not have stopped there? They went all the way into Poland, then tried to make their way into Russia.
Do you also think they had a legitimate beef over land to the west of Germany as well?
