I guess they put this long hollow candle in your ear and light it and the smoke or heat or something is supposed to clean out all the impurities in your ear.

Normally I'm not into the new-agey gimmick stuff but this ear candling or whatever it's called has me intrigued. I've talked to a few people who have got it done and they said it really helped them to hear clearer and one guy said his allergies were reduced after having it done. Placebo or real?

There are a bunch of sites on the net condemning the procedure as dangerous or completely phony. Have any of you had it done?

I once knew a chick who did that. I promised her I'd let her do it to me. But once I got to do her, I reneged on my promise & disappeared. She was hot, but something about fire in or around my ear wasn't worth another round in the sack.

I did a google search for ear candling a while ago. One of the top pages was this:
http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelate...s/candling.html

WebMD talks about how to get rid of excess ear wax. http://my.webmd.com/content/article/42/1685_50320.htm
http://my.webmd.com/hw/ear_disorders/hw91186.asp

Be very careful about using the peroxide and water; if in doubt, use more water than peroxide. And only leave it in your ear for a couple of seconds. The amount of wax it got rid of the first time made me actually dizzy.

I have had two bones replaced in my ear. After the surgery healed the doctor recomended I buy a bulb and use hot water occasionally. Wax is a good thing, too much is the problem.

I ear candled before. I could hear alot better afterwards. Of course that only lasted until the next morning then you couldn't tell. I'd suggest it, it's interesting to see how much wax you actually have in your ears.

I had that done about 11 or 12 years ago,she had the biggest set of ,....,ahem.
Ah yeah,... she wanted to candle me.How could I say no?
Yep removed a lot of wax,yea I could probably hear a little better and I would do it again but rarely.
It's probably like a colon cleanse, lol. And then your body starts regenerating more junk and replacing what you just got rid of. I do wonder about these things though, don't do it while your drunk or sleeping ;it is fire you know .
It's like antibacterial soap. That gets rid of good and bad bacteria. Continual use might make you more susceptible to disease

Uh-oh now that I think about it maybe I am prone to new-agey gimmick's after all. I've also thought a colonic might be a good thing to get as well after seeing it on Jackass.

They're called Q-Tips boys. No more ear wax. And no fire in your head.

B-)

Some people have hard, sticky ear wax in which Q-tips actually do not work all that well. Eventually they will need to have the ear wax removed by a professional or use a home draining kit. In some cases the home draining kit will only serve to soften the ear wax such that the family doctor can remove it with greater ease.

I know some people who have had ear candling done and it served the same purpose as a home ear draining kit.

My Grandma suggested (ie told) my Grandpa, Dad, and Uncle to do it when they gave up the ole family farm.

I went with them (about 10 years ago) and you should have seen the crap that came out. I mean I thought I as going to throw up. My dad who has spent most of his working life behind a desk dolling out loans had what the lady called excessive build up. My uncle who is an mechanical engineer had what she called more than what she had ever seen. My Grandpa who has been a farmer/welder/etc all his life had 2 ful cones in each ear. Barley, Wheat seeds, etc are just a few of the nuggets that was removed.

My dad to this day, goes once a year and not normally getting into alternative stuff swears by it and says his hearing is improved because of it.

No ones head caught on fire either which is a good thing

Yep removed a lot of wax,[/quote]

Just a note for those of you who didn't follow the links I found; most of the wax that candling "removes" is actually from the candle itself.
