Would You Volunteer to Fight Nazis?
According to this story, 60% of Canadians aged 18-35 would choose not to volunteer. I think this is an interesting question.
I'm not totally sure I would volunteer, but at the same time I don't feel there is a threat comparable to the Nazis, so who's to say if such a threat existed?
Thoughts?

If there was a REAL threat to our freedoms and security, I would consider joining. If Canada were directly invaded by foreigners for example....
Most wars today however, are based on bull crap (the war on terror) and I would never volunteer to serve someone elses agenda.

If anyone invaded Canada, I'd skip the military entirely and rip a gun off Canadian Tire and be an army of one. I may let the Military join me if I ran low on bullets.

Probably not. I'm 33 with a wife and two small kids. When I was 18...yeah no problem. Now I'd probably just try to profit somehow off the war.

My uncle volunteered. Was killed in 1942. I cannot say I have as much bravery.

If it was 1939 all over again I'd definitely line up to join. I'd aim for the airforce though, its a much quicker death hitting the ground from 30,000 ft.

If the Nazis invaded Canada I would complain like hell about it on Facebook, Twitter, and Calgarypuck. Take that!

In WWII the threat was very real and if you ask any vet would he volunteer the answer would be an astounding yes.
If someone offered me a chance to go anywhere back in time over the last 100 years I would ask for a gun with 2 bullets and return to 1939 to dispose of Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Hitler.
As far as the "war on terror". ask any family who lost someone in 9-11 if they think it's "bull crap"
Had it not been for this "bull crap" war us Canadian's may have lost the CN Tower among other things to terrorism.

Or as we would like to call you, spontaneous untrained bullet trap number 1.

Nobody in 1939 knew the full atrocities of what the Nazi's would be up to....so it's a little unfair to ask that question with all the knowledge we know now. It would be more akin to "Would you volunteer to fight if modern Germany invaded Poland?". I doubt many of the people in this thread would be quite so excited to get up and at em.

A lot of people forget that at the start of the war people didn't really hear about or know about the atrocities that the German's were visiting upon civillian populations or especially upon the Jews. There was also a great deal more global anti-semitism then there is now where refugee's were basically returned to the loving arms of the Nazi's. Until France fell the war was probably seen as a european problem. When France fell it was a bigger problem, but not one that riled up many Canadians.
When they went after Britain it became nearer and dearer to many Canadian's since we had a lot bigger of a connection to Great Britain back then.
News travelled slower in those days, but the real tipping point came as far as I'm concerned when Germany attempted to blockade Britain and worries about mass starvation and imminant invasion started to hit the paper.
I believe that after we declared war most volunteers didn't do it as much about fighting evil as a chance to go on a glorious adventure.
If Canadian's had held out of the war or not volunteered enmass, the slaughter of Canadians' by the Japanese, and the attack on Pearl Harbour would have probably had Canada sending more troops to the Pacific.
We didn't really find out the depth of Hitler's evil until he stabbed his allies in Russia in the back and we learned about the death camps.

On a sligtly unrelated note, but still kind of on topic:
Would it be considred a hate crime, if I (a white guy) randomly beat up some crazy white supremecist?
I mean techically I'd really only be doing it because I hate him, let's face it anyone who walks around with a swastika tatoo on their neck probably isn't employable enough to have anything that I'd want to steal, but I think, becaue our skin is samesies, that it might not be counted as a hate crime.
Food for thought anyway.

Being jewish would probably add a little motivation as well.

Canada wouldn't have lost anything. No one in the world cares about Canada except Canada.

I think with recently getting married and having a kid on the way, I'd have to really think hard about it. However, if I knew without a doubt (and not just media-driven propaganda) that invasion of Canada or England was imminent, I'd do my part.
