Green tea actually contains caffeine. Albeit a smaller amount

I don't think it's harmful to the baby at all, but ours certainly seems to react to it. She's tried on 3 separate occasions, and each time his sleep is just horrible (which means the following day is also a hellish exercise).

Well, thats partially true. A 8oz cup of regular coffee(brewed, instant) contains anywhere from 70-100mg of caffeine, while a 8oz cup of green tea has around 20mg of caffeine. However a decaf 8oz cup of coffee usually has somewhere between 1-10mg of caffeine so maybe there's an alternative.

The good thing about tea is that even though it has caffeine, the effects are released over a longer period of time, so you don't quite get that instant jolt/crash you do with coffee. I drink tea myself and find that it makes me much less jittery than coffee while still giving me a bit of a boost throughout the day.

Drink as much water as you can, and exercise. Lots of exercise. Flush those toxins out.

The caffeine is "released" the same way. The dose is the only difference

Caffeine has zero effect on me personally, whether I drink 10 litres of coke in a day or zero.
I just wish Caffeine free diet coke tasted like regular diet coke. Then I might drink it. Don't know why, but it doesn't taste very good.

Mrs Rathji went with an occasional Diet Coke when our first was little, and almost instantly we noticed a change in sleep patterns. Not saying it is causal but it was worth it for her to just cut it out entirely.
On the topic of caffeine, I am in a similar situation. During the last 3-4 weeks of classes I drank 4+ cans of pepsi every day (up from my normal 1 can) and now that things are more lax I can't get cut back. Tea has worked for me in the past, so I might try it again.

When I was doing university exams and papers and staying up late I would chew nicorette for a boost of energy that didn't fill me with sugar or caffeine or cream.

I found breaking my leg helped me quit caffeine and cigarettes. Although I'm back on the caffeine... I drink pop in cans and they're just so convenient.

Drink Darker brew, then go to tea - like orange pekoe or earl gray. Or suck it up for a few weeks =)
I limit myself to one in the morning and maybe... one in the afternoon. But I only drink coffee because I love the flavor so much, not so much for its effects. However, if I ever drink a coffee after dinner I will not be sleeping the entire night.

Just reading a little bit about the tea debate, namely green tea
Many people sensitive to caffeine report that green tea doesn’t give them the jitters, shakes and insomnia often related to black tea, coffee, or cola. In fact, people often report feeling calm after sipping green tea. Why is the effect of caffeine in green tea different from that of other beverages?
The answers lies in the chemical compositions of the tender young shoots harvested to make high-grade green tea. Two components alter the effects of caffeine in green tea: L-theanine and EGCG.
L-Theanine, EGCG, and the Caffeine Effect
L-Theanine (theanine), an amino acid found in green tea, promotes feelings of relaxation. As researchers study the effects of theanine, they are discovering that it works with many brain chemicals related to mood, including dopamine, serotonin, and GABA. Some laboratory studies suggest that theanine induces alpha waves in the brain, which are the hallmarks of a relaxed mental state. Because green tea contains an abundance of theanine, researchers speculate that the theanine counters the effect of caffeine and takes the edge off those caffeine jitters.
The second component in green tea that alters caffeine effects is EGCG. This miracle compound stimulates the body’s immune system in a myriad of ways. Science Daily reports that EGCG may be effective in fighting bacterial sepsis, and often deadly bacterial infection. In addition to its powerful immune system activity, EGCG mitigates the caffeine content in green tea. As you brew a steaming cup of green tea and pour hot water over the tea leaves, evidence suggests that EGCG binds to caffeine and neutralizes its effects.
