Well we know for sure that the refundable containers are!
In the program's first 10 days, with material collected from only one quadrant, the city earned about $3,500.
And-I-Pay-$8-Why?

Nothing wrong with adding a little flavor to the Pacific Ocean.

Refundable containers are so stupid nowadays. Get rid of the refund, and recycle them along with all the rest of the glass and plastic. Why the hell does it make sense to have a refund fee for some recyclables? Of course, first get a real recycling program, not a voluntary, pay-per-use one. Not to mention, people would actually be able to sleep in on a Sunday morning instead of being woken up by the herds of shopping cart enthusiasts.

|
This really got me, I live in a duplex and I called and asked if I should have gotten the bins since people on other streets around me got them all ready. They asked me a few questions, do I get my own enmax bill, what kind of place I live in and a few others and they said that I should have one. So they sent it off to another dept in the city.
About a week later I get a call saying that we are not eligible because there are to many houses within the alloted area. They base it on per square acre there can only be so many addresses or something like that. It was a few months so I forget exactly what they said.

Cigarette butts thrown out of cars also drive me nuts. If people don't have respect for the community, their faces should be shown. Driving while on the cell too.. so don't even think about operating a video camera..
I'm sure they didn't know they would have their faces on the news, however, they can be assured of NOT having their picture printed if they would have taken their crap to the dump like everyone else. It's just sour grapes for being busted. Suck it up.

If they got rid of the refund, More containers would end up in the landfills.
It's sad, but the incentive is still a necessity.

Public humiliation can sometimes be the greatest deterrent to illegal activities. Most people can afford the fines and they pay it and move on with no real consequences to their illegal activities.
When communities were small and everyone knew everyone else, there was less criminal activity because if you did something wrong and were caught.... everyone knew about it and it was tough to show your face around town. Nowadays with communities being so large, so many of us barely know our next door neighbors let alone the guy who lives down the street so when some people commit crimes they do it almost anonomously and when the get caught they go to court and nobody ever hears about it... except their immediate family.
I'm all for having their faces exposed to everyone. Too bad stocks in the public square have gone the way of the dodo bird! Maybe society would be better off if there was more public humiliation and less jail time.

Probably because using the city's estimate of $180k/year being earned by returning recyclables, and a conservative estimate of 1 bin/every 10 Calgarians (100 000 bins), that means the cost for each bin would be reduced by 15 cents.
So yeah, that's why you're paying $8/month, because it costs more than 15 cents/month to pick up your bin.

Well then, raise the deposit prices until it can cover the fee! That way my taxes get reduced!

so excuse the ignorance because I don't live in Calgary but do you also pay a recycling fee on your city bills?

Yeah, I kind of doubt anyone is going to be happy paying a $1.30 deposit on a can of coke. And if they do, you can bet they won't be throwing them into the recycle bin for free.
So not only will you have hundreds of dollars tied up in pop cans in your garage at the end of the month, but you'll also have to pay 15 cents extra for your recycling pick up.

City of Calgary FAQ: Is there a limit to the amount of garbage I can throw out?
At certain times of year, garbage volumes become higher than usual. During those times, The City may implement as needed a limit of up to five bags on the amount of garbage collected from each household.
In Nanaimo, you're only allowed to put out one bag. But you can buy "extra bag" tags for a dollar each (I don't think there's a limit, as long as you pay for the tags...) Sounds like a good idea to me.
And I think we're paying $8.40 for the curbside recycling this year. $8 was last year.

even if you don't have the blue boxes though? Here in Lethbridge in our utility bills we have a recycling fee of like 3 or 4 bucks without any sort of home pickup.

Honestly I have no idea.
I live in a townhouse so we don't get blue boxes, and I can't even tell you if I pay the $8/month. Though, I'm pretty certain I don't, I've just never looked at my bill that closely.

1 quadrant (likely the 2nd smallest) 10 days 3500 bucks.
The Cities estimate of $180,000 (annually) during a project in it's infantsy is hard to beleive and "low balling" in their favour.....gee! surprise!!
Do the math, it's more like upwards of a half million annually, if not more.
without actuall $ figures from an audit, this is a moot discussion, Having said that, there are a lot of people in this town that don't return refundables and are likely tossing them into their blue bins along with soup cans etc.
Bottom line, even if the City was pulling in 1.5 Million via the blue bin, we'd never hear about it.
