I find people are so full of crap when talking about their communities. I've lived in the South, the North, and downtown.

The Deep South absolutely sucks for a commute (only one route), has no public transportation for those who like to indulge in a few drinks on the weekend, unless you live right in MacKenzie there is screw all for shopping/groceries/entertainment in your own neighbourhood, and if you work downtown you have atleast an hour commute each way. I don't care what some people are posting on here, but I work downtown and I lived there. It's an hour each way to Cranston from downtown no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

The North has everything you need in your community, the commute is a breeze (I'd be at my house in Rocky Ridge in 25 minutes no questions asked), public transportation is excellent, but the weather absolutely sucks (always double the snow and a few degrees colder, and the wind drove me absolutely crazy), and I'm none to keen about the high school situation out there because I didn't work all my life to have my kids go to high school with the hoods in Bowness (although there are some excellent elementary schools that are brand new).

My choice would be to live in the North, but that's just my personal preference (as a working professiona, personally I think you'd be nuts to move from Westhills to the deep south if you work downtown). I just get a little riled up when people on here feel the need to bend the truth to make where they live shine in a brigter light.

On a side note, for those of you that live in Cranston, that's a nice new pub that Berwick House, but good god is there ever a lot of a D-bags that frequent it. Even saw a scrap outside there the other night. Where are they all coming from? When I was in Cranston it was sort of a family neighboorhood, not a place for the riggers to get smashed on the weekend. I'm surprised they weren't having drag races in the parking lot.

Perhaps I will buy a sweet helicopter.

My friend now lives in Auburn Bay. If he isn't on the road by 6:45 am, he just waits at home until after 8 am before he leaves. Some people can't have that flexible of a schedule though.

Don't forget when you are driving to MacKenzie down from Westhills, you are skipping all of downtowna nd are essentially straight on Glenmore. Getting from downtown to Glenmore is the worst part of the weekday commute if you ask me.

Are you still able to get to your place in 25 minutes with your access to Crowchild cut off? Getting in and out of Rocky Ridge is absolutely brutal now.

You're right that people will pump up their own communities. Everyone wants to justify why they're living somewhere.

Calgary's a great city with lots of cool communities. You just need to pick the one that has all the features you need.

It added about 3 minutes. I kind of live in the middle of Rocky Ridge, so it's not all that bad for me (I live in between Rock Valley Drive and the Community Centre).

Absolute pain in the rear end though. MY buddy lives in Rocky Vista and it has absolutely enraged him though. he had immediate access the Crowchild and now he has to drive all the way around. Claims it adds a good 8 minutes to his commute.

Do you know if that is a permanent closure?

Yes, it's very permanent. They ripped up the road there!

I drive downtown 5 days a week, and it's always 35 minutes each way at 8:00 a, and 4:30 pm. Unless it's snowing of course. Then I just work from home. It's simple really...you live and die by the deerfoot. Most days it's acceptable, but if anything goes bad, you are screwed. Construction has begun on the ring road though, so there is a tiny light at the end of the tunnel.

Every time I drive be there, there are a bunch of huge trucks parked out front. I assume it's construction guys from the hospital maybe?

Cranston is very family friendly though. 8 parks with playground equipment, the pathway system is excellent, and the new community centre is excellent. For example, they built 2 skating rinks - one for older kids/adults to play hockey, and one for small children.

Yeah when I saw that, I figured there was no way it was opening back up.

If you have to be at work for 8 o'clock, it's a whole different story on Deerfoot than leaving at 8 am. When you leave at 8 am, this traffic is already gone.

Commute is a problem in all areas of the City it basically depends where a person is travelling to, I live in the Deep South and work in the deep North (close to the Airport). One of my Co-workers lives in the NW.

The time to get to work is almost the same.

Taking the bus to and from work everyday I start work at 7 so am on the bus at 6 I only had on major delay going to work. Coming home from work depending on the bus I take I had a couple of 2 hour' commute during snowstorms with all the accidents. If I drive it would be alot quicker! 1 hour from when I leave my door at my house to arriving at the door at work on 10th ave sw

Fair enough. I leave my place at 7:50 am.

haha ... I think your anger may be directed at me somewhat. I can explain.

I'm speaking from a unique position as I'm a ctrain rider. When we moved to the south one criteria was that the house needed to be close in proximity to the ctrain. I love that worst case scenario involves a 20 minute walk to anything I need (generally anything i need is in shawnessy).

I don't even work downtown, I work at the university, so I'm even further north. Worst case scenario it takes me 40 minutes to get to the end of the ctrain line and another 20 to walk (that's of course if there's no bus which there usually is). The drive is shorter, but it's also more inconsistent. Something goes wrong on the road and the commute is infinitely worse.

I live in the Deep South (Lake Sundance) and I drive to the deep North (close to the Airport). Drive takes 25 to 30 minutes 95% of the time.

As for shopping or groceries statement, that is completely false. There are numerous shopping centers & groceries stores no more than a 10 minute drive.

Basically anyone that lives in an outer area of the city the commute using transit (to downtown) will be a problem.

As for Pubs, there are numerous pubs in communities in the South that is no problem... For example Chaparral has a popular Pub.

In my opinion the most important element is the School system.... Lots of areas don't have schools and bus the kids to different sections of the City.

I am making a move from Eua Claire area to Royal Oak in June. I work two blocks from where I work right now so having any commute at all is going to seem strange. To Royal Oak the commute will be right around half an hour, which to me seems reasonable for the benefits of having a yard etc.

I can't even imagine an hour each way to get to the deep south, that seems like it would have a serious impact on my quality of life.

Rocky Ridge is not 25 minutes to downtown in rush hour. I lived up there for several years and it's definitely only 20-25 minutes if you go in at 9am like I did, but if you need to make it in for 8 I found you were looking at easily 35-40min on a good day, and I hit 2 hours a couple times on snow days.

Coming home (leaving around 5:30 or 5:45) I found it to be 35-45 min home, and leaving at 5 a pretty guaranteed 45min+

So pretty much:

- If Person A lives in the community add 10-15 minutes on quoted time
- If Person B does not live in the community (and lives in rival community) subtact 10-15 minutes

Do I have this right?

What if person C lived there for years, and still liked it, but doesn't pad the figures?

I totally pulled off a 19 minute door to door drive from my house to the parkade entrance one day from the Ridge. Of course like all Northwesterners I completely disregard the speed limit signs on Crowchild.
