Default Canadian Sniper Record Broken

Well I guess it had to happen sometime, but a Brit broke the record for farthest confirmed sniper kill by 150':

Quote:
An army sniper has earned a place in military history by killing two Taliban machine gunners from more than a mile and a half away.
Craig Harrison's record breaking shots felled the insurgents with consecutive bullets - even though they were 3,200ft beyond the official range of his rifle.
The Household Cavalry veteran's kills from a distance of 8,120ft beat the previous record by 150ft.

Those distances are still mind boggling to me.

Edit: For you gamers, "auto-aim hackz!"

On a similar note, do they still do those sniper competitions?

I have no idea what they are called but i know in the past they were on TV, and the majority of the time we tuned the U.S. which always felt good considering our army is made up of "a couple slingshots and a tugboat"

^^^^^ the canadian army has always had a higher caliber of soldier than the US (on average). The US military might is in their size, supplies lines and technology, not in the individual soldier.

That said, a brit breaking the record is about a million times better than an american.

Well, it might be a good thing. The Canadian sniper story is sort of a sad one how it turned out with the entire platoon getting grilled through a scandal and forced out of the army and the guy who used to hold the record leaving the army out of depression and disillusionment at how they were persecuted/prosecuted.

Just to put in in perspective, and I looked it up. That rifle has a muzzle velocity of 3071 feet per second. He hit a target thats over 8900 feet away. Basically it would take a little more then 2.5 seconds to dot the i so to speak.

Count to 2.5 seconds, or look at your watch for for 2.5 seconds.

You could pull the trigger and light a smoke before the bullet him.

Basically he would have time to chamber another round take aim and fire before the first bullet hit.

So the first person would take a bullet.

The second one would have heard the sound of the bullet and heard the smack, had time to look towards where the shot came from and maybe seen the muzzle flash.

I always wonder how many feet above the heads they'd have to aim to get a headshot from that distance. 5..? 10?

Well according to the article the bullet took about 2.64 seconds to reach the target that was 8120 ft away.

The speed of sound is ~1125 ft/s, so the second guy wouldn't have heard the gunshot untill 4.5 seconds after his buddy got hit.

Now THAT'S crazy.

Just reading Wiki on the same question. with an M4 Carbine a bullet will drop 10 inches over 400 meters.

I don't know how far the bullet would drop in this case but I think your aiming over 10 feet. You adjusting the scope big time.

Too bad about Furlong losing the record. I still want to, and plan to, meet the guy one day.

He wouldn't have heard the gunshot, but he would have heard the bullet ripping through the air.

Even if he saw the muzzle flash, he wouldn't have heard it until after he was dead.

As the rifle is a 5 shot semi auto, the second bullet was quite possibly on the way before the first guy was hit!

A sniper being able to beat my ass or shoot me from another area code doesn't make tribal tattoos any less horrible.

I'd actually suggest that if he really wants to tell this sniper that his tattoos ar stupid, he should probably stand at least 8200 ft away, and yell it to him instead.
