Opera 10.5

Well, Firefox has been crashing on me a lot lately, so I switched to Opera.

So far, awesome. Its FAST.

I tried Chrome first, but it wouldn't keep me logged into certain pages. Opera is doing just fine.

The only immediate problem I have with it is when I right click on a page and say open in a new tab, Opera automatically moves to that new tab and I don't want it to do that.

I tried going through the settings but couldn't find anything.

You are clicking on the wrong thing. Instead of "open in a new tab" you should be moving the mouse down and clicking on the option below it "open in a background tab" :P







In fact, you don't even need to do that! Just press the middle mouse button on a link and it will open in a background tab.

Are you using mouse gestures? Tons of secrets and shortcuts in Opera many people don't know about. Hold down the right button and swish your mouse to the left for back and swish to the right for forward. Make an "L" shape to close a tab. Down-Up opens a new tab. Up-Down refreshes, etc.

I use Opera Mobile on my E71, miles ahead of any other mobile browser I ever had, love it.

Youtube's messing around with their new format and ads has messed up something with Opera and Youtube.

Get this:

This will also work for you if you use a youtube ad blocker to allow you to watch videos without annoying youtube ads.

2 - Rename it to "YoutubeProtectionRemover.js"
3 - write in your browser url bar, "opera:about" ... copy the address to "User JavaScript folder" ... go there ... then copy YoutubeProtectionRemover.js to the folder
4 - if you don't have a User Javascript Folder, press CTRL-F12 to bring up preferences, goto advanced, content, javascript options, and create a folder to put this saved .js file into.

Hate bringing an old thread back to life, bit it seemed appropriate. Recently Opera had told me about the v10.52 and v10.53 update. I had updated to both versions and noticed some serious memory issues. At least on my system (Win 7 64 bit). Opera seems to be eating RAM and running at between 25 to 30% CPU usage just running and not doing anything special. It starts out fine, but there obviously is a memory leak somewhere that requires the browser be shut down and restarted to get back to normal, every so often.

I love this browser, but this issue has become a real problem. I have since reverted back to the last really stable version for me v10.10. It is running much, much better, no memory issues. I would suggest if you are running Opera and have not updated yet, don't, until they can figure this out.

I actually moved back to Firefox. Chrome wouldn't render pages properly, and Opera keep saying 'unable to complete remote connection' on a variety of web pages.

Really? I have never seen that...once. That doesn't sound like a browser issue to me.

I've tried Opera, and Chrome, and I just find them to be fast, but not a better overall experience over Firefox. Meh, they'll probably make an upgrade to each of those soon enough that'll blow all of these out of the water.

Using this v10.10, man is this thing fast. Seems they really bogged it down in the last few updates.

Performance wise, Opera kills Firefox for me. I tried FF again last night and I just don't see why people like it much more than something like Opera. Most I would say have never heard of Opera or never tried it.

The Speed Dial and wand entry for logins and passwords is worth using Opera alone IMO. I tried the Speed Dial Add-on created for FF and didn't like it anywhere near the standard Speed Dial in Opera. Visual bookmarks is the way to go for me. Use it every day all the time. The login stuff is also great for sites that don't keep you logged in. I use that all the time. That way I don't have to remember my logins or passwords all over the place. Opera does it for me and does a great job.

Opera is fast alright, way faster than Firefox. If I didn't have the problem I mentioned above I'd still be using it.

Chrome is a joke though. Half the time it wouldn't even load pages, let alone load them FAST. Firefox is 100x faster than Chrome on my computer.

I'm too married to Opera mouse gestures now to ever be able to use another browser. I'm totally lost when using other browsers. It's second nature to me.

Is anyone else using 10.6, and are you having any issues with it? Google streetview finally seems to be working (it didn't work for me with the previous version), but now gmail doesn't seem to work when I'm in private browsing. Is there a fix for that, or should I just get used to opening a non-private window?

Other than that, I'm really liking the new version.

I love the new version. Everytime a new Opera comes out I'm surprised by how easily I accept it. I love the new features where you can just have the mouse on a word, double click it, and the context menu allows you to search that word or phrase in a bajillion things. Look for Chrome to copy that feature in the future as they keep copying Opera features like speed dial.

Does opera not cache browser pages on its server or is that just the iphone version.

If Opera caches pages and that is the reason its faster then its a non starter for me.

I use chrome only because it is fast and because it doesnt cache pages.

Simple test is logging into amazon or any service and testing it. If its the same speed on those services but faster on others than that means Opera is caching.

Running version 10.60. Would not forward account activation to Gmail but worked fine when I changed the email address to Yahoo.

Version 10.60 is much faster than FF 3.6.6 which has been giving me fits lately by crawling along and crashing all the time.

Opera has a page cache option you can turn on and off (called Turbo). It's usually disabled if it knows you are on a highspeed connection. Opera is fast because it uses a different engine than Chrome.

Opera just has all the built in features I need. Bothering to get all the extentions and addons I need to make Chrome and Firefox have the level of features I can activate out of box makes them cumbersome. I also cannot change the layout of Chrome anywhere close to how versatile it is to change the complete layout of Opera. I always discover new features everyday that aren't even documented very well but work amazingly when I discover them.
