You had to quote my entire post?

Anyway, If you'd read..... I was questioning the cost of the "Campaign".

Why would I think that increasing fines would cost more tax dollars?

I don't know, maybe because you were complaining about costs while at the same time asking for more spending.

BTW, isn't giving out these stubbi's doing exactly what you are asking for by providing more ashtrays? And they're even portable!!!!

[QUOTE=valo403;2485148] Kind of ironic that you bitch about a lack of ashtrays in one breath and then bitch about spending in the next,QUOTE]

Yes, I voiced my opinion about the lack of Ashtrays, I also touched on the subject of the spending habits of the City of Calgary. I also pointed out that the issue of spending was an entirely seperate topic....Didn't I?

It would appear that I'm not involved a real discussion, so to speak.

It seems more like a lot of contradiction and out of context attacks. Judging by the responses, I find it difficult to believe that my post was actually read or even skimmed over, let alone comprehended.

If the City and it's citizens are upset about Butts, supply more ashtrays.

Yes & No. As I stated previously, the City would not find themselves in the position they do now, Had they NOT removed the ashtrays (3 years ago) in the first place.

AGAIN!.....They kicked the smokers to the curb, Got rid of all their ashtrays, and now they are asking 20% of Calgarians to be responsible for a situation the City/Province put them in!

Sorry for the (!) ......but Sheesh!!

Who would've thunk that smokers might have to be responsible for cleaning up after themselves just like the rest of us. Pick up your stubbi, don't throw your butts on the ground, everyone wins.

$100 fine for spitting in public.

It has been on the books for years.

Just a thought here- and I could be completely wrong.... but do we see very few public ashtrays now compared to before because they were not effective?

At my last job they had designated smoking areas; away from the doors. Mounted on the wall were something call "Butt Stop" ashtrays- with small holes big enough to drop the entire butt into. Some of my friends smoke, and when I would be out there my observation was that very few people used the ashtrays- instead they decided to flick their butt.

Could it be that they determined that public ashtrays don't significantly reduce the amount of litter?

I think that's a valid question and observation.

I'm no "Authority" of course, But I think the question you pose boils down to Culture. When Smoking was more accepted and if I dare say, the norm, I think smokers behaved much differently than they do now.

Back in the day, a smoker would approach a building and "Butt" his cig. in the ashtray, on his or her way into the building. Over the past couple of years I think there might have developed a "what am I supposed to do?" attitude, If there's no ashtray, then the smoker will extinguish the offensive smoldering object in the most convienient and effective way available. IE Drop it on the ground and grind it with his or her foot.

I honestly don't believe that somebody did a study and determined that visible ashtrays are not being used, so.... "Let's get rid of them". If the Ashtrays of 3 or so years ago were still in place, and the City Introduced these new littering fines, I'm sure you'd notice a different "Culture" of smokers would soon emerge.

Keep in mind, In no way does my above comment explain why a smoker would chose to flick his "butt" as opposed to easily dropping it into a "butt stop". They must be the ones that are too cool for school.

Jeebus! .......Yes!

Did you read any posts in this thread?

The Point:

Had the City NOT gotten rid of all the outdoor Ashtrays, This campaign (stubbi's) would not be required.

....Ugh. Exhausting.

I read every single post. You say that is your point (which is valid in and of itself), but I'm seeing something more in your posts. It just seems that you don't want a program that provides you exactly what you're asking for.

Like my last post indicates, you want more ashtrays, which is what this program provides.

Yeah! ...An Ashtray that people have to carry around with them.

By your Logic, People should have to carry personal Garbage cans too?

Why do people who produce garbage get public receptacles?

But People who produce Garbage and Butts only get the former?

Why not get rid of public toilets and start handing out colostomy Bags!

A lot of people do. They're called pockets, purses, bookbags, etc.

As I understand it, once these Stubbis get full, their contents can be dumped in a garbage can, just like how people empty their pockets of wrappers, receipts, etc. when they find a garbage can.

As I understand it, if the "Ashtrays" were there, these Stubbi's would have never been needed, BAM!

Smokers leave others fuming

By MICHAEL PLATT, CALGARY SUN

[...]

Find a crowd of smokers and you’ll find cigarette butts littering the ground at their feet.
There can be an ashtray the size of a tractor-trailer hubcap a few metres away and smokers will ignore it, preferring to drop their butts on the floor.
It makes no sense.
The same shortage of wisdom applies to the smoking motorist, who lights up every day while driving, yet fails to consider the need for a container to hold spent cigarettes.
Out the window the butt goes, each yellowed filter another nail in the coffin of freedom for those who smoke.
Ditto every cigarette butt found in parks, on beaches, on sidewalks.
Smokers, by their refusal to properly dispose of their litter, are helping to bring about their own demise.
