Default Updated Thread: Steam for Mac is Live, and Portal is Free for Mac and PC!

Well, since the Apple Megathread seems to not be well-liked (no drama meant, I'm fine either way), we're back to posting separate threads for stuffs...

In a very brief press release, Valve Software today announced that the public launch of Steam for Mac OS X is scheduled for May 12th. Officially announced in early March, Steam will bring a major game distribution platform, including Valve's library of popular games, to the Mac.

Well, by Valve having an official client and releasing all their games, the hope would be other developers would follow suit with universal versions a la Blizzard.

This is made possible by using the Steam "cloud" right? Most PC games are build on DirectX libraries which still can't be ported to OSX.

And not many companies are willing to invest in OpenGL expertise like Blizzard.

Maybe Steam will make the OS X market more attractive to game developers.

Good news for people on a Mac. But come on Valve get on the next Half-Life already.

I'd rather Valve spend more time on PS3 development than mac development, but that's just because I hate gaming on a computer. Great for gamer Mac fans ... I'm just not in the club. I've been wanting to play Left For Dead on my PS3 for a couple years now

Does this mean I can finally play Left 4 Dead? Always wanted to try that game.

Ugh, have you ever used an apple mouse? Probably not because of that comment.

Is this big news for Mac users? I would've thought that most people who care about such things would have a PC.

I'm actually interested to see how many Mac users take advantage of this. I'm certain there are many that are awaiting it, but the majority of Mac users I know really aren't the gaming type.

Mac users, generally speaking, don't care about playing video games on their Macs. We have consoles or other devices for that.

PC fans like to mention the lack of gaming titles available for a Mac though... so... you know.

I'd rather the PS3 and Xbox just die because I hate gaming on a console. I've pretended that I hurt my hand at parties just so I didn't have to pick up the controller when it was passed to me. You guys have all the games and developers focusing on consoles today anyway. Stop complaining. Left 4 Dead isn't much fun after the first few weeks with repetative gameplay modes and being restricted to 4 players at a time. There are much better fan made zombie mods for source. Half-Life 2 was a terrible disappointment for me, I'm not looking forward to any more scripted rail shooter gameplay from Valve. I wish they would just update Counter-Strike Source.

So you made this thread for Windows PC users. Thanks for coming right out and saying it. I will keep that in mind when you whine and moan about Windows PC users criticizing Apple in your threads.

The fact that you're seeking validation from Windows PC gamers for getting into a small part of the gaming world late is kind of pathetic, don't you think?

I mean for years Apple fans have been telling us how they don't care about computer gaming because they have consoles and stuff, or better things to do with their time like editting movies, but now it's "Hey, we have Valve (and Blizzard)! Look how cool we are!" Get real. If computer gaming matters to you, Windows is where it is at and this doesn't change that.

Guess instead of saying "Mac doesn't have games" I'll say "Mac sucks for games". Go Mac!

Huh?

What the hell are you talking about?

Why can't we just have one flippin Apple thread without drama?

Edit: Oh never mind. I figured out what you're ragging about. Apparently your sarcasm detections skills are lacking today.

No, it's because you said yourself (without sarcasm) that Apple users generally don't care about gaming.

Then you make a thread about gaming on Macs.
