Default Final day for tax filing

Returns mailed anytime Friday night or early Saturday morning will be postmarked April 30, so there's no risk of incurring penalties.

People who are self-employed have until June 15 to get their returns in, though tax payments are due Friday night.

....

People who owe money and miss the filing deadline will be charged a five per cent penalty, as well as an additional one percent per month to a maximum of 12 per cent.

Do people actually wait until the deadline anymore? With the internet, I'll have my taxes done the moment I get my T4 in February.

I have to do mine tonight. Would have had them in sooner had I not misplaced all our tax information when my office became my son's new bedroom.

Well, I'm not sending off my payment until today, if that's considered waiting until the deadline.

Never doubt the power of procrastination.

That's considered missing the deadline. They penalize you if you don't pay what you owe by midnight tonight.

They will charge you a penalty if your return isn't filed by the deadline, not a late payment. However, interest starts ticking on late payments after 04/30/2010.

Right - I did my taxes before, found out I owed, so I didn't want to send the payment before today. Certainly it would be a bad idea to send it after today. But I haven't missed the deadline yet.

correct. As long as the payment is dated today and post marked today it is considered on time.

i efiled mine before the midnight deadline...just wanted to double check a few things...

interestingly, if you use the efile under "news" on the website it actually tells you that efiling give you until Thursday May 6 to address any issues that you may have had.

Then they don't care when you file it and probably secretly hope that you don't.

Yeah, I've really got to get mine done. I've got around 8-10k waiting for me, I just can't bother getting around to it. Just need one more slip from my bank that I can't seem to find.
