Can't remember if I ever posted this before but Paton Oswalt's take on Scott Auckerman's Comedy Death Ray sums up really well what the majority of stand ups think of Jay Leno.
It's worth a listen even if you are a Leno fan. Ignore the stupid text ad at the beginning.
All I heard is that he said that Leno is one of the greatest comedians of all time but he doesn't like Jay's personality (which I'm sure he's intimately familiar with...).
Did anyone else watch the Battle for Late Night on A&E last night? May have been a repeat, but it was new to me. It was great.
It was 2 hours and covered everything from Jack Paar, Carson, Letterman, O'Brien, Leno and everything in between.
Ya I watched it, was gonna mention that on here too. Missed the first half hour but caught the rest. I stumbled upon it just as I was about to turn the TV off and go to bed and ended up watching the whole thing, it was really interesting. I didn't realize Jon Stewart was initially considered for Jimmy Kimmel's ABC gig. Good thing he never made that move, they really would've had to put a muzzle on him in terms of his political views. That would've sucked.

It's funny because Stewart wasn't even political to begin with, he was just like all the other comedians/hosts but the Daily Show went in that direction and he ran with it.

That's what you took from it? Not that Jay Leno was once one of the best stand ups, took the Tonight Show and shut the switch off cause that was the point.
You were the one that threw out the word hack. Jay Leno has done nothing original with the Tonight show, uses easy, unoriginal, obvious jokes and devices and rests on things started by Paar and Carson. It is the very definition of HACK. Because Dave is arrogant doesn't make him a hack. That's like saying Bill Hicks was loud so he's a hack. Lenny Bruce was blue so he's a hack. It's part of their acts.
I don't think he would have. Even with limited options, he didn't even consider TBS because he'd be displacing the George Lopez show.
Just to clarify that, even though he is going to TBS and displacing George Lopez, Lopez was the one who contacted Conan about coming to TBS. He wanted Conan to be his lead-in because he realized that was the only way that anyone would remember that his show exists.

That is one of those things where Conan doesn't know what its like to be in the position Jay was in, not only does the human nature effect of wanting to be the guy come in. But Leno has had a lot of the same staff for over 10 years, and the 10pm show was being canceled no matter what.
So all of those people would be fired and never work together again. Its a lot more difficult decision than just 1 guy taking over for another, hundreds of people who have worked together for years would have lost their jobs
