While unusual, these types of events are not extremely rare.

Recently, a missing family of 3 (and a half) was identified in Florida from a van recovered from a canal.

It happens along Highway 1 in BC every few years. Sometimes it takes a couple years before someone stumbles on the wreckage.

You just wouldn't expect it and immediately I'd probably think of horrible scenarios that would have occured to someone. Of all the jobs in the world I can imagine few more terrifying than a police diver. Can you imagine having to scan the bottom of some muddy pond looking for a dead kid or something? You wouldn't see it until you were literally 6 inches away. Just thinking about it freaks me out.

These gorge lakes in the area do get pretty deep. Even Osoyoos Lake which is pretty small, and narrow goes down to depths of about 160 feet.

It would be interesting if they still had some photo's of what the road looked like in 1972 when the woman was reported missing. Back in 1972 I can't imagine Penticton had more than about 10,000 people and I would guess it was a two lane road and that those concrete barriers likely were not present in as many places as they are now.

I talked to someone who grew up there in the 60s and 70s and she said that the road around the lake was very treacherous and always freaked her out. She also said that some (stupid) people used to deflate most of the air from their tires and drive along the train tracks and occasionally, people would have to bail their car into the lake if a train was coming. Most people knew the schedules, but the odd person would forget I guess.

That had to be a rough life for him wondering whether his mother just ran out on him and never looked back. This is one of the few situations where finding out that she had died is as good of a resolution as there could be.
