Basically just walk around broadcasting that I am a tourist and as an added fun twist, I love to role play when I travel, pretend that my family is VERY wealthy and would just do anything to make sure I was returned safely to America.

Find a way to see the Great Pyramids. They're close. You might also take dinner cruise on the Nile. Cairo is a zoo and the traffic horrible. I read where it's the worst city in the world for traffic. We were there for a few days and never felt unsafe. Oh, yes, go to the bazzar. It's really cool but the selling is high pressure.
I was just there in January. Go to the Pyramids... Check out the bazaars. The Egyptian Museum is a must for sure. Traffic is pretty crazy, but the locals are pros at getting around.
Where are you staying? I spent four days in Cairo so I'm certainly no expert. A day and a half should allow you to see some things.
I'd make the trip out to Giza to see the pyramids (it's basically on the edge of Cairo now which seemed very odd to me as all the pictures you ever see are taken looking away from the city out into the desert). The Egyptian Museum is also worthwhile. Traffic is crazy, but if you need to cross a street just cross beside a local (they'll probably be trying to convince you to come with them to their perfume or papyrus shop anyway).
Just got back from Egypt a couple weeks ago. Pyramids of Giza are something you have to do, but I found that a day trip to Memphis/Saqqara/Dashur to see the Step/Bent/Red pyramid and huge Ramses statue were far more interesting.
I'm not a shopper so wouldn't recommend the Bazaar's but there are some interesting things to see in Coptic Cairo and Islamic Cairo and the Citadel if you just feel like walking around. The museum is great too, but there's so much to see that you could spend a day inside there if you wanted.

Too long! We got stuck for an extra 5 days because of the volcano. Our trip was originally about 3 weeks long, travelling all over Egypt. 2 weeks with a tour company and then we spent a week on the Red Sea scuba diving.
I spent three days in Cairo - 1 go to the Egyptian musuem of natural history - you must do this first and foremost. Furthermore pay the extra 10 bucks to see the mummies. It is the best museum I have ever been too.
2. the pyramids, at least get a photo, is this something that even needs to be said.
3. the markets - lots of stuff going on and a great way to see Egyptian commerce.

I plan on going to Egypt for 3 weeks as well. No tour, I plan on traveling on my own. I take it the rest of the trip was good outside of Cairo?
