Exclamation Shaw now throttling torrents?

This seems to have happened in the last couple of days. I can't get any torrent to download over 100K average, usually I get over 1000K. They seem to spike up to 400K at times, then drop down back down to under 100. It bounces around but the average is very poor. I tried from multiple sources, same thing

Anyone else? This is the first time I've had this problem. Doing an online speed test shows normal download speeds. If true, goodbye Shaw for me I'll look at alternatives. Not happy, maybe this is temporary?

Check your torrent client settings for max download speed. I had this happen awhile ago when I upgraded uTorrent. It had set all of my downloads to 50kb/s. Changed it to 0 (unlimited) and things are cruising again.

That's the first thing I checked, it's set to maximum. I tried changing ports, and tried two different computers same result. If anyone has Shaw let me know if you are having the same problem. (I'm in N.W. Calgary)

Yeah I'm on the "basic" cable internet and I still get north of 1,000 k.

Edit: I'm in the SE, Mckenzie.

I've never had any real problems in my area, I don't think there's a lot of "heavy" users in my neighborhood surprisingly.

You might need to enable the "encrypt outgoing packets" option in the torrent client. I've never had shaw throttle and i've got torrents running 24x7

I've got the basic high speed with Shaw. No Extreme or anything.

utorrent has been crashing my internet connection for over a year on Shaw. I pretty much can't torrent at all. Luckily I don't do it much, but if I want to surf and torrent I'm out of luck. I have to turn off utorrent if I even want to surf at all. I'm not sure what happened.

uTorrent was giving me a lot of problems, I use Vuze now and it's been excellent for about two months. No problem at all.

I tried that, going to try another client (I use UTorrent) but I doubt it will matter. This happened in the last 48 hours, nothing else changed so it points to Shaw

Thanks, I have the same package. I'll give it another day, if it's the same I'll call Shaw and flat out ask them. I doubt they will answer the question though.

Turn down max connections. A hundred active connections will kill your connection much faster than high throughput. Also throttle upstream traffic - most connections are more sensitive to that than downstream.

I've got no problems in Bankview - 1MB/s is pretty common.

Im on basic in new brighton. I rarely get spikes up to 900 using utorrent and then it settles around 300. Even with vuse on my macbook im still around the same of 300

Well I just installed Vuze aka Azureus (dumb that you have to jump through hoops to get the old interface back). But shockingly, my download speeds are back to normal. WTF? The latest version of uTorrent must have some bugs I guess, very strange.

So FYI, uTorrent may have some issues that need to be resolved. Good thing I didn't call Shaw and complain haha. Thanks for the replies everyone.

I find that 99% of the time it isn't actually Shaw. They could really care less so long as you pay your bill on time.
