Calgary Bylaw will give you a Stubbi
They're handing out free Portable Ashtrays (called a "Stubbi") and cute little litter Bags in hopes of halting the Havoc being created by cigarette Butts!....
Will "Sheeple" really walk around with stinky cigarette Butts on their person?
To me this is just weird. I guess this wasn't an issue back in the Dark Ages when they had ashtrays beside most buildings. I'll likely get slaughtered now, but this is over the top! IMHO

$1,000 for the ones that aren't fully extinguished, and $500 for the extinguished ones.
Finally, a by-law that makes sense!

I have heard a lot of people carry around a small container for cigarette butts in Japan. It makes sense that people should be more responsible.

There needs to be more ashtrays. I hate how few there are especially going into buildings.

I had one of those handed to me in Dublin way back in 03. I'm not sure anybody uses them, but it seems like a good idea to me.

While cigarette littering will go down, flaming garbage can spottings will go up. COUNT ON IT.

This is why some people toss them on the ground.

Uh, smokers already smell like stinky cigarette butts.
Also, a Sucrets tin is a mighty fine portable ashtray, that's what most of the smokers that I've worked with in the bush use.

I'm surprised that the number of people who smoke in Calgary is 20%. That's definitely higher than I would've thought.

I have a friend who got the $1000 ticket a couple weeks ago, from a CPS officer who pulled her over.

There's plenty of them around. You'll recognize them by the piles of Tim Horton's cups, tissues, McDonalds bags, daily newspapers and other combustible materials over flowing from them.

Did you laugh? I would've laughed. Sure, you might lose a friend, but a good laugh reduces the blood pressure.

The law might make sense, but I think the price tag is way to Harsh. Flicking a lit butt is a more severe fine than running a red light?

Running a red light also carries demerit points and the possibility of losing a license.
Tossing a cigarette but runs the risk of starting a fire.
I'm fine with the fine, and I sincerely hope the police nail every person they can. Can't stand selfish a-hole smokers who flick their butts everywhere.

They used to be everywhere, I'm guessing they removed them because, don't most buildings have a 10 meter rule......as in how close to the building you can smoke?
I guess it would have been stupid to put them on light standards and other imovable objects 10 M away, what choice do people have other than toss them to the curb or like one poster mentioned, try to sneak it into a garbage can.
I would laugh if there were a rash of garbage fires because of this.

Is it so black and white that the fine should still stand even if the crime is commited on a snow covered suburban street, or durring a down pour?
I can see if it was in a rural area surrounded by fields, or the many inner city grasslands. Surely the CPS Officers will use some discretion.

Fight it on what grounds? It's too much? That sounds like an effective defense.
