I can't agree more, individual experience brings horrible memories of grinding for hours in T-rex forest to get all my guys to a high enough level to do the last part of FF3. There are some characters I just don't like playing and it's such a chore.

HOLY Chapter 9 boss was INTENSE. It's like I just had it figured it out, been fighting for almost 20 mins, got him down to 1/4 health, then the Doom counter appears over your head...

Switched from a conservative strategy to a balls to the wall strategy and beat him with about 150 left on my counter (on my first try, too ) Haven't had my heart in my throat like that (while playing a game) for a long time.

You can't unlock that until chapter 11 and it's a sidequest. And you don't have to take 10,000 steps unless you want a better reward.

Which boss was that? I am on Chapter 10 and I don't remember that.

But man, towards the end of the ARK enemies power gets ramped up like crazy and I am having to skip past many enemies. It is getting quite annoying.

My new most hated FF enemy are those ffffking annoying spinning bird like creatures in the ARK. 2 rounds it takes them to kill me, and it is driving me crazy. I almost broke my remote.

Not quite sure why you're having so much trouble. The only thing that gave me any trouble in there is when the Ooze guys managed to merge into one giant ooze thing. Even the Greater Behemoths weren't so bad... found the regular battles in chapter 9 to be much more challenging.

With those birds, as long as you take out the one that dishes out status ailments (and you should be able to in 1-2 turns, they have super low health) the fights go really quick.

Prob was just lack of sleep last night. I have been logging some intense hours the last 4 days.

Playing video games I mean.

Bump!

GF finally bought FF13 so I thought I'd give it a whirl having thoroughly loved 10 and 12 (I can't believe so many people hate 12).

A couple hours in, I find the game so freakin linear. Every map is just one long path from point A to B bleh...

Also, the characters are SO annoying. Snow and Hope are so bad. Hope especially. Seems like Hope is pretty strong, but I am never going to use him even though it might make my life a lot tougher.

Still, having a lot of fun and loving the baby chocobo.

How's the rest of the game? No spoilers please! But I guess most of you have finished by now.

Well, waited on posting on this because I wanted to play without spoilers.

I'll preface by saying that any FF game is better than 75% of games out there.

But I was fairly disappointed in this chapter.

First the good. Great story, interesting characters, mind blowing graphics and movies of course.

But I found it way too short, too easy, and lacking in gameplay.

Very path based, not much to explore. Even when you finally get down to Pulse, it's not that big or interesting.

Plus all the enemies seem to be palate swaps of other enemies. Not much variety.

The game played more like an adventure story than a true RPG because you were led to pretty much everything you had to do in a very linear sequence. No talking to characters, no exploring maps, no choice in travel.

The battle sequence with the roles and the stagger meter was interesting and strategic, but I felt a little cheated only being able to play as the leader. Especially when my healer would decide to get smart and clear status ailments instead of continuing to heal or something stupid like that.

Overall I felt it was a step backwards. I really enjoyed battling right on the map in 12, but even if that wasn't an option, it still would have been nice to be able to control all characters.

Plus, only having three in a party annoys me. I know it's done for strategic and gameplay reasons, but are you really telling me that if your travelling in a group of six, a fourth or fifth character isn't going to help out on the tough battles?

''Ok, are you ready? This is the battle to save the world. Ehhhh, you guys take a breather...''

Oh, and the music, with the exception of the very last battles, was kinda disappointing.

Ahhh well, it was a good story, with great movies.

EDIT: Re: difficulty even the extra hunts weren't that difficult. I beat all but two of them in my first playthrough, before even heading back up to Cocoon. Just the Neochu and the secret guy in the faultwarrens were left for me when I came back. Oh and the newly beefed up dinos.

I remember in 12, the very last hunt was epic. He had like 58 million hitpoints (not as much considering this battlesystem) and took almost 8 hours to beat, if you could get through it without dying.

Hmm, in comparing this FF13 to the other 11 Final Fantasies (I don't count FF11 for obvious reasons), I would say this one probably ranks near the bottom for me. It was better than FF12 only because I liked the story more, but that's about it.

It was really pretty to look at, I'll admit, but gameplay wise, it was missing so many elements. I missed not having a worldmap, not having proper armour, and my biggest gripe, no towns.

The story had so much potential for a lot of exploration. If they would have fleshed out Cocoon and Pulse with proper exploration by giving them proper towns and dungeons to explore, this game had the potential to be an epic. But sadly, that didn't happen, and for that, I must say I was pretty disappointed with the overall experience.

I am wondering why so many people don't like 12.

The hybrid real time fighting/gambit was the most fast paced and exciting system out of the various FF's I've played (7,8,10,12,13). Fighting on the map is incredible and much more immersive than having some preset fight screen every couple seconds.

I also found the difficulty level of the side-quests to be far better. For example, getting to Zodiark was one of the toughest things you could do if you were doing it at the appropriate level. Doing the hunts were also a blast, and they each presented various challenges.

I don't know, for me, I'd rank FF12 to be one of the best and most innovative FF's.

It's pretty much FF11 but offline and single player.

And ya I still like 6 the best, it was the first one I ever played.

I agree with everything you said, except the comment on 12...

But you are right, the histories of both worlds could have and should have been explored further, there could have been more secondary characters. And having additional cities and town to travel too would have been great. One of my favorite parts of a RPG, especially the old ones like the older Final Fantasys and Secret of Mana etc. was rolling up to a new town after a long dungeon or hard boss battle and being able to explore it, looking at new weapons and items, getting new plot lines, etc.

I was liking FF13 up until chapter 11. Now it seems like a lame ass grind it out RPG. I hate that. I prefer to just have a story.

I probably won't waste my time trying to finish it.

Chapter 11 is when you goto Gran Pulse right? And you get the option of side quests?

For me, this is exactly what every FF series needs, the option to grind out exp to make the later half of the game easier. The lack of towns to upgrade weapons/armor/accessories has been a real let down for me, I'm glad to see some element of what made FF the name it is today.
