Default Canadian hockey fans desecrated U.S. flag after win

Whoops.

Quote:
After the Canadian national team defeated the U.S. 3-2 in overtime in the gold medal game in Vancouver on February 28, police say Smith and Seifert went to the top of desert mountain, removed an American flag that had been placed there to honor the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and replaced it with a Canadian flag.

Read some of the comments after the story. Wow.

These guys were stupid to do what they did, but it's not like they had any idea that flag was supposed to be some unofficial 9-11 memorial. They probably just thought it was just another one of the millions of flags Americans put everywhere and decided to have a little ill-advised fun.

Funny that so close after September 11th attacks the American Woman's hockey team thought it was a good idea to put a Canadian flag on their dressing room floor.

According to some, that actually never really happened.

I desecrated a Habs Jersey on May 25, 1989, after a win.

When the term 'desecrate' is trotted out, I was expecting a crime moderately more heinous than 'removed and replaced.'

By any and all standards this is unbelievably tame, and absolutely nothing worth getting their panties in a twist about.

I think Americans have become the single most easily offended society in the world.

I thought the same. I was also surprised to learn that desecrating a flag is a criminal offense.

I agree but then I hear , on howard stern show, that a muslim group wants to kill the makers of South park because of a joke about Muhammad on the show. SO maybe we are running neck and neck with the muslims?

Two things.

This is a non-story and that is a stupid thread title. This was news about 2 months ago and it is not a big deal. (EDIT: I see the OP just used the same title as CNN did, still stupid though)

Two Canadians replaced a US flag with a Canadian one when we won Olympic Gold. Some people were offended, end of story. I read a longer story that had comments from other townspeople and they said the one offended lady was totally over blowing things. They played a prank. Any criminal charges are just plain stupid.

Second, the US team DID put a Canadian flag on their dressing room floor. However, just like this story it was taken out of context. The US women never desecrated it, stepped on it or did anything else that would offend the Canadians. They simply stared at it to get inspiration to beat the Canadians (which they didn't).

So someone takes upon themselves to erect an American flag on public property as their way of showing support for 9/11. That's all fine and good, but should the government and police really be protecting everyone's make shift tributes on public property? Is that really vandalizing, just because someone said it was a 9/11 tribute?

The guys who did it didn't even realize why it was there, and felt bad when told about it. I'd love to see this go through the courts. I don't think there is anyway these charges would hold up.
