Still haven't seen it. Wondering if I should get the DVD or try and find a theatre still showing it in 3D.

This movie is pretty much useless on your television, HD or not. Its only purpose is to be watched in a 3D Imax, otherwise it's nothing but a waste of money. In a giant Imax, it's pretty cool, I'll admit, but I could never see myself watching this on my TV at home.

To each their own I guess. I own the dvd and it's just as good the second time on my t.v than the first time at Imax.

lol any new release is out within a week you just need to know the right people.
I'll still buy it again when it comes out officially since I'd like a better quality DVD.

Wow, look at all the cool people in this thread who aren't mindless fruit cakes. CP must be the last bastion for appreciation of fine art and culture left in the world of unwashed masses.
Never seen Avatar and not interested in seeing it, for the record. Tips to dress this opinion up so its 100x more pretentious and condescending are appreciated.

I don't remember where I read this (maybe HDDigest) but I think they are going to be releasing a 'Superbit' type version of this BluRay. For those that don't know some studios released their DVDs as Superbit movies where the disc had no extras but had very high bitrate audio and video. According the blurb James Cameron said he was going to do something similar with Avatar though I would have thought there would be more than enough room on a BluRay disc to accommodate a high bitrate transfer and extras.
Nevermind. It looks like this version is that Superbit thing and there will be an Ultimate release later this year:

I get that it is just supposed to be a mindless action flick but that's no excuse. Films like Die-Hard, T2, Aliens, etc demonstrate that you can have action movies that also have a story and real characters.
Ugh...just an awful movie.

Sounds like someone forgot to get high before the movie...

You thought T2 and Die-Hard had stories and real characters? Comic books are deeper.
Avatar is eye-candy. Very good eye-candy. Don't know how good it will look on TV.

As for buying it, loved the movie but I won't buy it. I've got a 32", standard def tube TV. It would be a wasted purchase.

Perhaps - but comic books are also pretty deep in terms of storyline and characters.
In the action realm - T2 and Die Hard succeed at every level while Avatar succeeds at one - some cool visuals.

What makes T2 deeper than Avatar? Skynet is better realized than giant thunder cats?

I'm an Avatar fan, but just for argument's sake to gain a better understanding of the non-Avatar fans, I'd have to point out originality. T2 was pretty much a brainless action flick(which you could pretty much say for all Arnie movies, God bless him), but at least the story idea was original(besides the fact its obviously a sequel). Avatar however has been done before, it could've been re-named Dances With Wolves In Space. So I can see how some wouldn't like it, as they probably feel like they've seen it before.
This movie shouldn't be broken down like this though, as we all know its all about the visuals. I swear they should've just passed out little bags of weed with the 3D glasses, I think the former's just as essential as the latter for this movie. Just sit back and enjoy Pandora in all its psychedelicness, and feel like a freak for oddly wanting to plough the female blue chick.

I agree with you in theory. However killer robots from the future really isn't THAT original either. Terminator just had the advantage of using a SciFi meme and twisting it to an action flick for the masses. If the concept was completely original Harlan Ellison wouldn't have gotten his panties in a knot at Cameron over the view of the Skynet future.
