Portrayed as a mean thug much of the time, Kiniski was in fact an intelligent, college-educated man, who would cram for his exam, which was usually riling up the fans wherever he was in the world
Its funny how all these "Golden Age" wrestlers seem to live past their 70's...
but the 80's & 90's WWF era ones go before their 40's.
Yet young guys still think it is smart to do steroids to look "buff" for a year or two, when we probably have one of the best long term studies ever giving you every reason not to.

not that the 'roids are beneficial in the long run, but I think it's the abusing of prescription painkillers which is the bigger danger to wrestlers. Seems that the life itself is dangerous, but add the drugs and it's a wonder if any see the other side of 50.

Compare a Golden Age pro wrestling match to a modern day one and you'll be able to figure it out. The matches are a lot harder on their bodies these days.

Perhaps the fact that golden age wrestlers would rarely consume enough pain killers to take down Nick Nolte or shoot enough steroids to recoup a battle riden calvalry unit might have something to do with it as well,

A former (and original - I think) Eskimo. His mother was also a long time councilor in Edmonton who had a school named after her. All around an interesting guy.
Gene was one of my neighbors back when I was way younger. He used to mow his lawn in essentially his wrestling wear pictured above without the belt and shirt, all the while blasting some opera music. Not the prettiest sight for an 8 year old.
He was great entertainment for me at one time watching TV in Vancouver. He would have these grudge matches with the Mormon Giant (Don Leo Jonathon) where you'd actually forget it was fake and think there was real blood flowing (maybe there was). To me this was the golden age of wrestling (along with Stampede Wrestling) before the WWE or F came along.
I'd say to myself, come on you're too smart to watch this bull but Kiniski and others would draw me in.
