Grand Theft Auto was also amazing. I loved that game Mercenaries for the PS2 as well.

while I would argue the best video game ever was hockey, I wouldn't say NHL 94, I'd have to go with Blades of Steel... classic man, just classic! I love that game.
But on the topic of NHL 94, it's such a classic friends of mine back home play it every weekend during the pre-drink before heading out to the bar. We've done it for years, on big nights the crowds get into it as well as the players (more than one controller has been broken over a close playoff game).
There's a championship belt and everything. The event is merely called "Championship"
HOWEVER
and this I'd like to hear feedback on
are the Pittsburg Penguins TOO GOOD in that game? As it stands right now, and has for several years, the Pens are banned from Championship play. Should they be? The record for consecutive championships is 14 (set by the Montreal Canadiens).
All in all a great video game

My hockey game of choice was Wayne Gretzky hockey for the PC. Hundreds of hours spent on that sucker.
Other faves:
Commodore 64 - The entire "Games series" - Summer Games, Winter Games, World games, California Games, etc. Great stuff
Also Jumpman Junior
Also had a Colecovision growing up and played a game called Ladybug for many an hour.

Anybody else play Intellivision? The handsets had a disk to control the characters, and my brother and sister and I used to wear out the thingy underneath the disk, and my mom had to keep buying new pads.
We had a cool move on Lock & Chase that allowed us to pass many a level...
Bump & Jump was pretty slick too.

Nintendo: Contra - that game was legendary..... up up, down down, left right, left right, a-b, a-b, start!
Super Mario is close after that.
Atari - Pitfall, although River Raid was pretty good too.
After that, most modern consoles seem to produce a whole lot of good games, too many to play and give the rank of legendary. Perhaps I just ran out of time as life went on but I just didn't seem to play the crap out of games on the modern consoles.
Although BF2 is currently giving that a run....

you forgot the select before the start and I too belive it was B-A

My Favs all-time:
1. Madden (particularily the 2001 version which was the first on PS2, I literally creamed my pants the first time playing that. Honorable mention to '98 with the introduction of franchise mode. This is the one that started all the multi-year sports games we see today).
2. NHL ('96 on PC, the first with 3D graphics blew me away, not quite as much as Madden 01)
3. Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball (first one on SNES. Rented it about 100 times, before actually buying it, still played it all day after I bought it).
4. Super Mario 3
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 (Arcade, when it was new and I was 7)
6. Mortal Kombat 2
7. Mario Kart (original)
8. Goldeneye
9. Sim City
10. Aerobiz Supersonic
11. Zelda 64
12. Euro 2004 (brought soccer games to a new level for me, actually started watching soccer)
13. Grand Theft Auto

I don't think I played any game more then Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64. Everyday after grade nine a bunch of us would head over to my house or a friends house and sit down and play 4on4 "Man with the Golden Gun" mode for hours.

Nowadays, Counter-Strike takes the cake IMO. So incredibly simple yet so incredibly addicting. Buy gun. Use gun to kill enemies. Killing enemies gets you money. Use money to buy better gun. Use better gun to kill enemies more effectively. And so forth...
|
Counterstrike is so 2001..... It's all about Battlefield 2 now.
Ultima 5 was probably the best of the series, turned into a graphics pig after that.
Oh yeah, we gotta put Gauntlet into this thread! Many an allowance went straight to that machine!
Weird thought for the day: A friend of mine is looking forward to having kids so he can sit around and play video games with them... We are a new generation indeed.

I remember playing Tecmo Bowl for so long one night that when I went to bed and closed my eyes, all I could see was that screen with the 4 play options on it. I thought I was going crazy. This ever happen to anyone else?

Oh yeah Rouge. Before I would go to sleep I would think about falling tetris pieces and placing them.
Tecmo Bowl was awesome. Bo Jackson was unstoppable.

We totally are a weird generation. I don't know a single guy my age that can't spout off the Contra code. I got into an argueement about the select start aspect. I never played Contra as a on player game so I always had to use select start.
The NHL games were the best ever. I was an only child and made my dad play them with me. Shortly afterward He got addicted and would force me to play before I could eat dinner. Once they added users records it became an embarrassment.
Here’s some other gems:
Nintendo: Jackal
Sega Master System: Double Dragon, Choplifter, Rambo
Genesis: General Chaos, shining force I & II, Toe Jam and Earl.

Anyone else get the "Pear Juice" comment he made about NHL 94? It was for Per Djoos, my buddy used to play with that guy all the time, he had good speed. I was the first in my buddies group to learn the old get the goalie swimming with the left - right move. Man did that pi$$ off my buddies as I could score at will.

Ahh yes... Starcraft... many a time I've referred to my nasty bath mat as the "creep pad" Marine rushes were my favorite, what a great game, I can't believe they STILL haven't released a sequel.
Another PC Game of legendary status. StarCon 1 & 2. Remember the Syreen ship crewed by women that looked like a....errr...Johnson.. Ur Quan's..... That was one of the best head to head PC games ever, quite the workout for my Tandy 1000 .... (the TX model with the 286 chip.... B-) )
