Hah... no, the suspension goes on a national system so EVERYONE knows.

Good question regarding your license though. I assume you could get it back once the 30 days is up. You would have to contact the investigating officer and he would have to release it to you.

Or you go get a new one.

Why did you mean when you said the insurance company wouldn't find out

I'd say accept the suspension, and treat it as a wake up call or a lesson to learn from.

I don't know for sure, but I would suspect a suspension (similar to an accident) is something which insurance companies would see when they look up your record so I'd expect a bump in your insurance rates as a result.

It's always this way for drinking and driving threads. I remember Resalien getting just f-in detroyed for a thread like this. The CP police honestly sounded like they would have been okay if he was stoned to death in a public square for his actions.

This guy doesn't sound like he was a danger at all, it just sounds like that new GDL system is pretty harsh. I'm glad that wasn't around when I was younger.

The kid was driving after drinking on the same roads my wife drives on with my son in the back seat. He deserves every ###### comment he gets and more.

Suck up the 30 days like a man and count your blessings that it wasn't worse. And please do the world a favor and learn your damned lesson.

Not sure why they didn't make you blow. Cst in a rush, end of shift, didn't want to see you blow over and have to lay a charge, cutting you a break... Could be any number of reasons.

After the suspension, you take that piece of paper to the District Office that the incident occurred in during regular business hours and they give you your card back.

I frequently drive after drinking. Unfortunately for you it is completely legal when I do it so you better lock up your wife and son. They may not be safe!

Thanks for the replies, very helpful. How does this work with insurance? Do I need to contact them? Do they contact me? Or do I simply just get to drive once that 30 days is up.

Interesting you say that...so why was he pulled over? This guy was driving in a way that raised the concern of another driver who called the cops. That might not sound dangerous to you, but vehicles weigh too much and have too much power and should always be considered dangerous, even with an experienced SOBER driver behind the wheel.

Yah, CP police come out in full force, especially when it is issues that are dangerous to their families.

Well, it is a good point. This guy may be a newish driver, but I doubt having a beer or two is going to affect his ability to drive. So I think your wife and son would have been safe with this guy on the road, he's just bound by very strict rules under the GDL program.

However, I don't think he specified how much he had to drink, but if it was just a drink or two, I wouldn't be worried about him.

Yeah sorry, after posting that I realized I hadn't actually read anywhere how much he had to drink.

Maybe the OP could clarify how much he had to drink and how long it was before he drove?

He probably didn't have to blow because it's an automatic DUI if you're on a GDL license. Any alcohol (in this case, he admitted consuming alcohol) warrants a DUI.

CPS usually makes you blow when you have your class 5 to determine whether or not you are DUI (over 0.08).

Depends on what you are asking.

Are you asking if literally drinking while driving is legal? If that is what you are asking then, no it isn't legal. You can't have any open alcohol in your vehicle. Even if it is unopened there are restrictions. To be safe you should always leave beer in its original packaging (in the case) when you drive and should put all alcohol in the trunk to be really safe.

Are you asking if it is legal to consume alcohol and then operate a motor vehicle in Alberta? It that is what you are asking then, YES it is totally legal. There are restrictions however.

For one, there is a limit to which your blood alcohol level can be at. I believe it is .08 here in Alberta. The cops can give you a DUI even if you are under that limit but act intoxicated.

Second, is that you can't be a GDL driver. They have special restrictions.

That being said, it is completely legal to consume alcoholic beverages and then get behind the wheel. It is totally legal to do a shot of tequila and then go for a nice Sunday afternoon drive. There are just restrictions on how much you can consume before it becomes illegal.

I can't believe you didn't know any of that.

If that is all you got not sure what the issue is. Take the 30 day suspension and go on with your life.

You don't know if he was impaired at all since you have no idea when or how much he drank, so you don't know what he deserves at all.
