Both Dexter and (especially) True Blood are pretty ho-hum. True Blood was actually awful.

Woo. thanx for the tip on Breaking Bad just started to watch it yesterday. hmmm i currently don't watch any TV series, weekly anymore. The last one was 24 last year. Even with Lost i'm like 16 episodes behind. Tried Pacific but that 1st episode was so disappointing I'll prob wait until they all air.
Just a heads up. AMC is getting Walking Dead in October. It's about zombies is currently one of the best comics out there. Its' written and directed by the guy who did the Green Mile and Shawshank. Can't wait!

People have left out Californication which is a great show. These are the shows I'm either watching or have watched of which I would highly recommend:
The Wire - Best beginning to end series I have ever seen. Rather intense and not overly uplifting but great drama and acting.
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - Most offside show I've seen but they do it so that you don't feel offended. Hilarious.
Arrested Development - Best comedy I've ever seen.
Six Feet Under - Great show, worth watching just for the acting.
Weeds - Again another entertaining drama; they've managed to keep me interested even after 5 seasons.
Dexter - Great show, Season 4 was one of the best seasons of TV I've seen ever. The main reason this show is so good is because of Michael C. Hall though; if it didn't have him it wouldn't be great. S1 was great, didn't love S2, S3 was better and S4 like I said was awesome.
Breaking Bad - Just finished Season 2; unbelievable. My current favourite show, unreal acting...its one of a few shows where I think about it long after the show is over.
Californication - Duchovny is really good...this show has one of the funniest episodes I've ever seen.
Entourage - Just a lot of fun; everyone wishes they could have a life like those guys...driving around in a Vanquish...awesome.
We have True Blood on our list, only so much time though...don't want to be watching TV all the time!

The original Ren and Stimpy.
There are quite a few stupid episodes so maybe google the top 20 or so and start with those.
I don't think I've ever met anyone, except me and my cousins, who ever watched it. I recently *bought* the entire run of episodes and I absolutely LOVE it. I forgot how funny it was.
Highlights include when Ren refuses to go to the dentist, when they sell rubber nipples, when Stimpy's cousin Sven comes over (Don't whiz on the electric fence), Powdered Toast Man and all of the Log commercials. My favorite is the civil war log and invisible log.
If you like Simpsons (seasons 1-9), Futurama, Beavis and Butthead and Family Guy (or any of the above) you'll probably find it hilarious.
Oh, and John K (creator and voice actor) is Canadian and Billy West who does Stimpy also does Fry and Zoidberg on Futurama.
Looks like most of my favs are from season 2.

I know, I know.
The storyline seems extremely interesting, but I simply can't get into it for some reason.
Weird.

My experience was the exact opposite. I don't follow many 1hr tv shows at all anymore.
I knew a lot of people that followed it so I'd heard good things. Sometime late in season 1 or early in season 2 I saw an episode on TV and watched it and was instantly hooked.
I was totally lost, but I was instantly hooked. I didn't even know who Michael C Hall was because I didn't start watching Six Feet Under until this past September.
I missed much of Season 3 but made a point to watch season 4.
I hope at some point MC shows it from the beginning in HD like HBO is doing right now with Six Feet Under.

Has anyone ever watched Smallville? It seems like an entertaining premise but for some reason I get the feeling it's a chick show. I am very hesitant about the one recommendation I got for it.

I really liked the first season of Dexter. Season 2 was OK, but, it got really ridiculous towards the end. I started watching the third season and it was too lame to continue. From Jimmy Smitts' super cheesy acting job to the absolutely terrible dialogue. I don't know what keeps you guys watching. Every scene without Hall is a trainwreck.

while season 3 is the weakest, if you don't watch season 4 with John Lithgow you're doing yourself a huge disservice. it completely makes up for how "meh" season 3 was and is probably the strongest series of episodes since the first season

Was bored the other night and watched the first episode of Season 7 of The Shield again on Netflix just for kicks (I don't have the entire series on DVD quite yet).
It made me just want to start watching the entire series over again. So freaking great.

Cable
1. Dexter
2. Breaking Bad
3. Sons of Anarchy
Broadcast
1. House
2. Criminal Minds
3. The Mentalist
I end up watching lots of broadcast series cause there's just more content... like only 7 episodes in the first season of Breaking Bad? Pfft. But if that's what it takes for the content to be as brilliant as it is, I'm all for it.

I gotta admit I try and watch Smallville when I can. I didn't watch much of the first 8 seasons mainly because it was hit and miss at times it would be awesome at others it would be Degrassi High with aliens.
This season has been pretty good as far as I am concerned. There is a real effort to lean towards the DC justice League mythology instead of just Superman. Also they have increased the budget this season so the effects are actually pretty good for a show on a secondary network.
I think this season has been pretty good, there have been appearances of some more recognizable DC universe characters rather than the usual obscure characters that are probably dirt cheap to licence. We have seen Hawkman, Martian Manhunter with all his powers, Green Lantern (Mainly just a reference but I thought it was noteworthy) Zod, Silver Banshee and a few others.
The problem with Smallville is that when its on its game, it is a really good show, but when it has an off night it is downright aweful. So I could recommend it, but you might catch a giant turd laying of an episode.
For what its worth I thought last nights episode was one of the best.

Just finished watching the entire series of Arrested Development. I'd seen several isolated episodes earlier but that doesn't give this show justice. You really need to watch every episode to get the full impact of a joke. Possibly the best tv show of all time.
