Lol, that's what happens when you make nerds angry.

They're upset because the studio is "double dipping", releasing the theatrical version and the extended version at different times.

I'd have to side with my fellow nerds on that one. It's purely to try to milk more money to release the two versions at different times.

Meh, they know that the nerds will buy both anyway. Because they're nerds.

To be fair to the studios, I'm sure that some people actually do prefer the theatrical releases. I don't think these will be huge sellers, though. The extended versions will be big sellers.

I don't even remember the last time I watched the theatrical versions of LOTR. Probably not since they were first released on DVD. It's always the extended versions for me. I think I can pretty much recite the Fellowship of the Ring word for word while watching it.

Yeah, the extended versions are so much better.

That being said, if this makes them more money, good for them.

Looks like someone read "How To Become George Lucas Rich: For Dummies"

I would have given it 1 star cause I didn't like the movies, extended or not.

It used to be a cash grab when companies released a regular version first and then an extended version.

I don't think this is really the case here. Everyone already knows the extended editions will be released soon. Hell pretty much everyone that will buy the Bluray version probably owns it on DVD already.

If every consumer already knows there will be an extended version, why complain that it is a cash grab?

My thoughts as well. Everyone who wants the extended version isn't going to buy this version. Everyone who wants the extended version is going to be smart enough to make sure that they are buying the extended version, very few are going to be fooled that way.

I'm sure there will be a lot of silly and impatient people who scoop up this release knowing damn well that they will also buy the extended. Then you'll have clueless people buying it as a present, not knowing there is another version to be be released soon, etc.

They'll sell a ton of this release and more of the extended, the plan will work.

I get furious when record companies do this with a $15CD, a $50 Blu-Ray is even worse.

Considering that most of these people already have a copy on DVD, it would take a pretty impatient person to do this.

I can understand hardcore fans who watch the movies regularly diong this. For them if they get a dozen views in HD before the release of the real set, it might be worth it.

Also casual fans who don't care for the extended may jump on this. There was a price error on Future shop's site last week selling this for 30 bucks. I didn't jump on it because i knew it would be a complete waste.

They made LONGER versions of the LOTR movies? They were too long to start!

I get exactly why everyone is giving it 1 star, the double dip.

But from the reviews I read the videos actually didn't look that great either. Again, people think that when the extended's come out, the picture quality will be greater.

Ex. Fellowship of the Ring got a 2.5/5 for PQ, however, I thought it looked great, way better than DVD. I'll be watching Two Towers tonight, and RotK tomorrow night.

I bought them because I have been waiting for years for them to come to blu, and I'd rather double dip then wait another 2 years.

Yeah, Return of the King (#3) normal edition is 3hrs, 21 minutes. The extended edition touches 4 hours.

I don't think they're too long, but 4 hours for a movie is pushing it. That is a damn long time to watch a movie. That's like watching Rambo 3.5 times.

All they needed to do was place a sticker on each box saying "Now including Liv Taylors infamous nipple slip.

A billion nerd dollars would materialize right away.

Does the extended one have the Sam/Frodo hot man love scene at the end? Where Sam goes ATM?
