That was a really good close by Gregg. He seemed extremely confident out there. Much more confident than Frasor.
I like that the Jays are winning right now even with Hill, Lind and Sniders bats being ice cold.
Edit: Gregg is huge for a pitcher, he has gotta be 6'6 and 240 pounds. I was intimidated watching him pitch from my couch, I can't imagine what it feels like in the batters box.

Lind is ice cold? He's still hitting .333, and has a OPS of .978. Maybe he hasn't driven in a lot of runs yet and only has one home run. But 99% of MLB hitters would happilly put up those numbers over a 4 game stretch and call it a slump.

That is a carry over from his first game where he went 4 for 4. I don't think he has gone more than 1 for 4 in the last 3 games.
That being said, even with Hill, Lind and Snidre not hitting as hot as I expected, like you said, there OPS is great. They are all showing great patience at the plate. It is a good start for a team who had a horrible RISP last year. Long season though, lots of ball left to play, I am gonna try to not get my hopes too crazy high.

Couldn't agree more that Gregg looked wayyy more confident out there closing the game. Another great 9th inning comeback by the Jays.

I am relatively new to watching baseball, how do they calculate the batting average and what is a "good" average?

I believe an average hitter wants about a .250+.
That's getting 1 hit for every 4 at bats. A good to great hitter can go .300+. so a hit for every 3 at bats.
Albert Pujols (with Joe Mauer and Dustin Pedroia) is probably one of the best hitters around right now and he goes about .330 on a season. That is pretty insane.

Batting average is as simple as it gets, it's the number of hits you have divided by the number of at bats.
An official at bat is either a hit or an out or a play where the other team makes an error on a ball hit in play.
On base percentage is number of times a player reached base by a hit, walk, or hit by pitch divided by the total number of plate appearances.
A good batting average is .275, an elite average is anything over .300. A good on base % is about .350 and elite is anything over .375.
Of course it depends on the position a player plays. For example first base, DH, and corner outfielders should put up better averages as those positions are not considered to be as important defensively.

If memory serves correct, didn't Chipper Jones hit like .335 last year? He's a damn good hitter as well. It's impressive he's doing it at his age too.

Chipper had his worst hitting average last year since coming into the majors at .264 the year before that was his best at .364.

I really liked Gregg, I don't think I'd ever seen him before. He has a nasty running fastball that he could throw wherever he wanted and he mixed a filthy cutter followed by a game-clinching slider against the last batter.
I look forward to a Mockingbird post on his pitch f/x.
I actually really like this bullpen with three quasi-closers,;
Gregg is kinda the new BJ - guts it through against power hitters, Frasor smokes contact hitters and Downs against the elite or lefty dominant.
It's really the ideal situation to have with the crazy over-valuation of closers and a great mix of skill sets.

While running the risk of getting flamed again for hating the Blue jays, if you haven't seen Gregg let me give you the heads up.
for every performance like this where it looks like he can kill everyone he throws in 4 games where that fastball is right down the middle of the plate and the ball looks like a softball.
He certainly has the talent to be a good closer but like way too many guys cannot throw his good stuff on a consistent basis.

Yeah, you're right this is just based on one appearance against a bad part of an ok lineup. I'm just trying to see what AA or Cito or whomever saw.
Still, what struck me was how un-like he is to our other closers. I still think of him in approach and stuff as the new Beej (closer BJ Ryan), but with the protection of a complementary bullpen instead of being "the guy."
