What was wrong with Downs as closer last year? Or the new guy we brought in...Gregg?

I don't know what the deal specifically with Downs was last year, but after he recovered from injury it was either a rift with JP or Cito or both. Frasor doesn't have the proverbial stuff for being the closer on a regular basis. Today was just bad luck, but I don't think he can handle the pressure mentally. Downs is my guy until proven otherwise.

They're trying to maximize Frasor's value so they can possibly get more in trade for him.

Not sure what the problem with using Downs is but Gregg's problem is that he sucks.

Well, good to know Marcum is back healthy.

If someone were to check the stats on his 08 season, you're going to find a similar trend to the way this game went. I bet you there are 7-8 starts where he started the game with 5+ IP and 0 or 1 hits.

Hopefully he can play around with his pitching a little bit and eliminate this trend... moving him from a good pitcher to one of the elites.

Frasor had more saves last year than Downs. I would bet, the Jays will use all three of them in the closer role.

I'd like Marcum's speed to be up a bit, but I guess he's always hovered in the high eighties.

If he had a better fastball I think he'd be even tougher to face.

High eighties will be his peak. If he wants to improve his FB he needs get more life or learn how to throw that Cutter Roy left hanging around... Not that his FB wasn't looking hard to hit yesterday (On MLB Gameday... )

Jays game isn't available tonight unless you have the coast to coast Sportsnet package?

Men's beach volleyball on instead. Wow.

He has always used his FB to set up his change.

I doubt you're going to find more than 10 pitchers with better change ups than Marcum in the bigs - it is THAT good. Problem is with Marcum is that his FB isn't hard to hit (he can disguise it sometimes with his slider and the cutter). The problem with him is that he can't hit his spots perfectly as the game wears on / hitters seeing the ball better. His cutter by inning #6 can flatten out.

The best games Marcum had in 2008 were ones that he mixed his curveball in. It is a C+ curve at the best of times, but it keeps hitters really off balance and changes their overall approach. He'd throw it maybe once per AB, but that was enough to screw with them. If he could develop his curve even more, maybe to the point where he can throw it 2-3x per AB if needed, he'd be an ace.

7 runs on just 4 hits is impressive. Wells needs to pee in a cup.

Can only hope these first two games gives Wells some confidence that will carry on throughout the year. Great start for him so far.
