Small potaoes. My iTunes library is currently 378GB. I have the same library on a mac, and I have it on my windows laptop. iTunes runs just fine with it.
I used to hate iTunes on a PC just because I didn't use an iPod and didn't have any Macs. I had no reason to use it, and any time I tried it it seemed slow and clunky. I use it now, though, and I have no problems at all.
Cool - maybe I'll give it a try again. I'm not sure if it was the size of the files or the number of files that caused it problems cause keep in mind, this was all music. Either way now that big libraries are more common, maybe it can deal with it.
It's been a while so details are fuzzy but I think the 10,000 or 20,000 song threshold is where things really started to get really shaky on it.
Oh, cool so I get to buy an extra adapter to do that?
It's not that big of a deal. This is the Epson P-6000 Multimedia Photo Viewer for photographers.
It's primarily used to backup your photos in the field. Yes it's smaller and has a larger hard drive (80 gigs), but it's also limited to just that one task and it costs $720.
My point is while it's easy to say "oh great, they just want another $20 out of you to buy an adapter" it's also easy to lose the big picture, which in my mind is that there are many devices out there for comparable prices that only do 1 or 2 things (photoframes, image backup devices, portable gaming consoles, DVD players, ereaders).

I understand ... we were talking about two different things. I thought you wanted it to do something different with your photos. It really does sound like what you want is a laptop.

Wow. You missed the mark so badly there I had to duck. The iPad accepts mp3's and ebooks in epub format. Doesn't get a whole lot more open than that. You seem to equate the need to use itunes to populate the ipad with needing to purchase things from itunes to populate the ipad, which isn't the case at all.

I just wish I could test that keyboard somehow. I know I'll be fine with it, since I've been using a touchscreen keyboard for 3 years, but I still just want to play...
There are many aspects of keynote that I believe are more advanced than the standalone version. The photo resizing is excellent and the ability to use your finger as a laser pointer or drawing tool on the slide is extremely useful.
As far as I know, you can mount the iPad over WiFi and drag and drop files to it from a PC.
I haven't heard that you can't fore sure use the USB dock connector with a USB drive either.
I use Air Sharing on my phone to move files that can't be emailed. You just go to http:192.168.1.119:8080 on the PC and select the files and upload them to my iPhone.
There is also iTunes file syncing, iwork.com, google docs, and a plethora of other ways to move files to the iPad as well as 3rd party hardware solutions. If not having a USB port built into the iPad is the 'reason' someone would not buy it, they probably didn't want it anyways.

What are these 3rd party hardware solutions you speak of? If those exist and are stable, they might actually resolve some of the issues I have with the iPad. I'm skeptical but it never hurts to ask.
As for not wanting an iPad... I wanted what I thought it was. Now that I find out more about it, it seems the laptop/netbook route meets my needs better right now even though a tablet type computer would have some serious advantages. One of reasons, but not the only one, is the ability to plug in a usb device.
Has Apple pulled their heads out of their ass and allowed you to synch wirelessly yet?
It drives me freaking nuts that I have to plug my iPod into my MacBook to synch it every time. Blue tooth? WiFi? Why put all these awesome features on both devices and make you use a frigging cable to get your crap across?

Some people think that's coming with iPhone OS 4. I don't... but we'll see tomorrow.
Don't forget folks, just because we don't have it in canada yet doesn't mean that there aren't apps in the store AND we are privy to the "Free for today only" deals. Weatherbug is free today for the ipad. Interface looks SWEET.

There's a bunch. Don't know of one off the top of my head.
Let's wait until the connectors actually ship because Apple hasn't said that the USB camera connector won't be able to load files from a drive.

Hey, leave the Epson alone. It wasn't meant to be an iPad.

I don’t think it is either, it’s one of those things that should be simple (really, you are just encapsulating your sync traffic in IP packets rather than USB packets) that Apple can’t or won’t address.
Kinda like the 128kbps down sample sync option - it’s been available on the iPod shuffle since day 1, and is only now available for other devices.
Well I'm excited, I just ordered my 16gb iPad and am having it shipped to my aunt that lives in Portland, who just happens to be visiting in 2 weeks!!!! And with the dollar where it is and free shipping, it'll cost me $505
It it wasnt for the crazy earings, that chick would have been attractive.

I'm interested in where this thread goes once more people get an iPad, my mom called me up saying she wants one...sigh.
I told her that I wouldn't be able to help her or give her any tech support if she bought one because Apple locks down everything, locks out even rudimentary processes, and basically controls every feature of this thing and controls a lot of the content you can access, buy, or transfer to it through all of their own channels. I guess I have been spoiled by PCs for too long that the idea of consumer electronics where I cannot change all the software to whatever I want or the freedom to use any device that I want or put on any format file that I want or expect home brew files to work is just crazy.
If I could accept that this is just as a portable internet browser, TV viewer (in which I need to pay for content), photo album holder, or ebook reader I suppose it would be okay, but I keep thinking of it as a computer. Then again, I can't think of a PSP or DS as just videogame consoles either, I couldn't bear the thought of using those as intended either.
