Perhaps his corruption would decimate the Taliban, and not the country. Frak him and Frak Afghanistan.
The west shouldn't be pushing for (western) reforms, but I don't think Karzai has anything to really complain about at this point. Don't force-frak women.....how is that such a hard rule to adopt?

We are just learning what the British and the Soviets learned the hard way - leave the savages alone...

I thought you used a Karazie spelling of crazy for a second, and thought, well, duh, who doesn't know that is crazy thinking to join the Taliban'? When I noticed it was Canadian-citizen Hamid Karzai thinking about joining up... mind=blown.
I'm with Vlad... GTFO of there, they are essentially caveman, and want to stay that way.
No offense intended to the cavemen who may be reading this forum.

Anyone who followed Afghan politics prior to the NATO occupation, would know that this is nothing out of the ordinary for Karzai. I was shocked that the West actually wanted anything to do with him. The guy would fist rape his own mother to have power.

They should let him join the Taliban. He would be sucked dry of information then beheaded.

Afghanistan is a tough situation. In Iraq once the US figured out that they should be using Saddam's former army and political guys to restore power things went a lot better. In Afghanistan you can't really do that because none of those guys, including the ones they DO have working for NATO are interested in doing things the right way.
Even if they apparently get bribed like crazy.

I for one am glad we are bringing our boys home. The ideal of the mission is a noble one, but you can't work with people who live within a middle ages mind set.

Right. Whatever you may think of it, Iraq was a stable state with well-defined institutions and a history of central rule. Afghanistan has always been a bunch of loosely organized guys with guns competing with other loosely organized guys with guns for land, water, drug routes...

Anyone who takes this threat seriously has no clue what's going on. The Taliban would behead him in 30 seconds, and Karzai is not that stupid.
It's funny how NATO is the one INVADING another country and yet Afghanistan is the caveman. Put yourselves in their shoes. I love how people like to engage in these types of discussion without any knowledge just so they can feel better about themselves.

I'm sorry if I am uninformed.
Based on my information, Afghanistan seems to be a backwards country with customs that are not in line with ours, and for the most part I don't understand how it's possible to reason with them when their politics and religion are so intertwined.
I understand why the war was started, I understand Canada's involvement in it. I also understand why Harper is pulling out our troops, when there seems to be diminishing returns from our continued military prescense there.

Oh, I wasn't replying to you.
I happen to agree that their politics and culture are so completely backwards that it'll take a small miracle to do make something of it.
But that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Afghanistan is a backwards country based on western standards sure. But do you think the people there think they're backwards?
Why not ask why NATO is in Afghanistan? It's kind of stupid to call a country savage when they are the ones being invaded for a reason no one seems to know.

A culture that doesn't condemn the killing women and children simply because they oppose certain beliefs or hold a different political opinion is indeed backwards.
If they want to be more conservative and fundamental with their laws, fine....but that isn't exactly what the problem is.
The Taliban are a bunch of scumbags. Even Saddam's people pale in comparison to what the Taliban have done in the past.
Plus, the US actually got rid of the scumbags in Saddam's regime. It was the working with who was left that turned things around. Who exactly do you work with in Afghanistan?

I was under the impression that Afghanistan was invaded as a response to the Sept. 11 attacks, and their support of the terrorist organizations that had a part in those attacks.
Canada, as a member of NATO, and an ally of the USA, committed armed forces to the effort.
I'm pretty sure that was the reason NATO originally invaded Afghanistan. Why they are still there is a result of the conflict created between the Taliban and the NATO supported government.
As far as calling their culture barbaric, what else would you call a culture that marginalizes any person that does not toe the political/religious line. What do you call a country that passes a law that condones rape? If its not barbaric, backwards or medieval I don't know what is.
Western countries don't understand these cultures because Western countries generally do not condone marginalization and opression the way Afghanistan and its government obviously do.
