I wouldn't put empty beer cans in there either.

haha, "the u part of the plumbing pipe"....... love it. I thought yours was a serious post till I read that.

In-sink-erator and Waste King (2 of the biggest disposal makers), claim you can send pretty much anything at them. They even recommend putting bones in to help clean and sharpen the blades.

The only tip I can give has already been mentioned, start the unit up and then feed the food/evidence into it.

They are such a waste of money.

Buy a .99 cent metal mesh trapper for your sink drain. Works like a charm, catches all the crud from your plates and you just tap the food into the garbage and rinse it off.

I've found two websites that encourage regular grinding of coffee grounds as a way of scouring and freshening up the drain. At least one manufacturer's site says grounds are perfectly fine
Ive always been told that as well. they will also absorb grease/fat that gets trapped and help them through the pipes.

This is only applicable though if you are not on a septic tank, in that case nothing like that should be drained.

Q: What's the difference between dead babies and roast beef?

A: Nothing. They both clog drains when you put them through the garburator!

What's so hard about using a garbage can? This is a serious question. I've never had a garburator. Why do people have them?

Ideally you don't garburate anything. Should be composting all your organic waste.

Well if you're like me, I go a week or two between taking the garbage out, so if I was dumping food waste into the garbage, my place would stink.

Better to just grind it down and let it flow to Bonnybrook.

Agreed. Everyone should be composting. It's not difficult and you can use the resulting soil for your garden, flowerbeds etc

Not expensive either:

In Calgary, garburated material is composted by the city.

Anyhoo, the only feasible way to compost meat is via bokashi.

I suppose its just what you're used to. My entire life we've had disposals in our sinks and any leftover scraps go down the disposal. I don't put food in my trashcan if I can help it. The cans are picked up once a week and the smell of old food can get pretty strong. My cans are stored on my side yard, and my next door neighbor's patio is on the other side of the fence, I would feel bad subjecting them to an upleasant odor considering how frequently we all eat outside.

I've never heard not to put rice down the disposal. I've put rice down the sink many times and have never had a problem. The only time I ever killed the disposal was after peeling potatoes and having way too many raw peels go down there and jam it up.
