I used to be so 'with it' when it came to technology ... well ... when I was about 16 ... but your post read like this to me:

I'd be thrilled if we could just buy a 3G data plan from one of the mobile companies but there's no way that's happening. Pay as you go would be the next best thing ... can't wait to find out. I hate to say it ... but I may not be able to hold out for a 2nd generation version of these ...

haha ... i obviously didn't word that properly. I jailbroke my iphone to emit a wifi signal that can be shared by anybody in my immediate vicinity. This negates the need to buy the 3g ipad as i can just send out my phone signal and use that. Ultimately I'm not sure I like the jailbroken phone as it's been acting up since I did it.
People seem to want a lot of their music easily accessible, which is why they keep making larger and larger mp3 players. And how many movies does it take to hit 64 gigs? And that 64 gig number is only for the biggest, most expensive version. It just seems a bit much to claim for something that holds as much as a 2005 laptop.
My wife insists that every time I wipe her PC, I put all her 20 gigs of music back on it.
She uses maybe 100 songs on a regular basis.
People need to realize they don't actually need what they want.

The funny thing is that the real site is such an abomination this will probably be an improvement for all users, not just iPad users.
This is why the average consumer (ie. less email addresses than pants) will not care about the lack of flash - "what's flash?".If it goes on behind the scenes and it works, it doesn't really matter whether HTML5 or Flash is the solution used.
Every website is optimizing to serve pages in iPad specific formats. Kind of ironic because website designers have been doing this for Internet Explorer for decades. Content providers have a vested interest to make their pages work on as many mediums as possible.
No Flash only becomes a problem when you can't do something because of it. It was more of a problem three months ago and is becoming less of a problem with announcements everyday.
Edit: Gmail launches iPad-optimized version.
No surprises really, but definitely a key piece for many of us.
That Marvel Comics app looked awesome. When I first watched the iPad announcement I didn't see it as something I needed. I already have a MacBook and my iPhone. However the last few weeks it dawned on me. I was reading the paper at the coffee shop and and thought to myself this on the iPad would be awesome and a hell of a lot less messy. Then I was out for coffee the other day again; killing time. Didn't have my MacBook with me and was surfing etc on my iPhone and wished it was bigger.

I think its interesting that you've seen a complete shift in how content producers are approaching the iPad as a platform. It used to be, if you didn't have Flash or a browser that met some other requirements to use your site, then it was tough luck for the consumer.
Now, media producers are tripping all over themselves to get content on to a device that is going to only have a several million users in its first year, and a device that calls ALL the shots when it comes to the tech, the implementation, and the distribution channel.
I can't wait to see if NHL GameCenter Live goes to an iPad compatible format. My hunch is it will, and I think that's pretty incredible. What percentage of the couple million iPad owners are also hockey fans, and also subscribe the GameCenter...and yet they will in all likelihood produce it.

Yup, it's all about bargaining power. Apple has the strength to pull off a move like not supporting flash. They can force the content producers to adapt their offerings. They truly are a Wal-mart of their industry.
What content producer wants to risk not having their product on the next must-have device? Especially if their competitors are already there.

I definitely agree with that, but I think we're a long way from it not being a problem. Every band, photographer, hotel, and way too many small businesses have turned to Flash for their websites. The two things that have made me realize this are running NoScript in Firefox, and my non-Flash smartphone. I'm no fan of Flash (at all) but its currently an annoyingly big part of the internet. I do agree that it might take someone like Apple completely cutting it off to finally force a migration, but I don't want to be one of the people with it cut off during the changeover.
The day NHL gamecenter becomes ipad compatible it the day I throw money so hard at bettman he'd better duck. Looking at what MLB does with their app makes me salivate with possibilities. It also makes me wish I didn't find baseball intolerably boring. Blast!
I can't express my delight that so many sites are offering flash free content. Quadcity has a point, sometimes the inability to display flash is highly annoying, however in my two years with an iPhone I can't say I've ever found it to be a horrible hinderance. That's just my personal experience, I'm surely not saying the problem doesn't exist. If you don't have a version of your website for me to view, I simply move on. Last week I was trying to choose between sushi places. One had a website and the other did not. Decision made.
Very shocked to see the kindle app show up on the app store!! Very pleased but still shocked. I didn't think that would go without a fight, but yet again I've shown my predictive ability to be garbage.
Very jealous of our American neighbours and best of luck to ktrain trying to get one in Vegas tomorrow!
What really annoys me is when sites auto-detect that I'm using a mobile device and auto-forward me to a wap version (or some other streamlined version) of their site.
flash/html5 is kind of analogous to blu-ray vs hd-dvd. It's going to be a long drawn out fight but html5 will probably win.
To me it looks like the industry is probably pissed about adobe's stranglehold of an important internet technology. And it's becoming more important as online-video grows.
In a fight with Microsoft, Google and Apple all on the same side, I don't see how Adobe thinks it could possibly win this one.
-Microsoft is fighting for Silverlight and html5 is a blow to flash
-Google wants an open and fast internet
-Apple is mad at adobe for not properly optimizing flash for safari
-Linux users don't like that flash is a pain to use on their system
In the end it will come down to the developers. Will flash completely disappear? Probably not, but it likely won't be as prominent as it is right now.
ugh, the delay from US launch to Canada launch sucks. i want one NOW! and iwork
I was going to buy one in Phoenix on Friday, but with no keyboard dock, no camera accessory, no cases, no nothing except iPads, I think I'll wait until the Canadian launch WITH accessories.

Hopefully the rumored April 24th date is true, and they open online preorders soon.
I'd rather get it shipped then deal with the zoo at Market mall.
