Looks like the book sellers are starting continuing to roll in...
In addition to the ones already announced, Barnes & Noble announced their app last week and now Amazon has announced their iPad app this morning.
I have to wonder if Apple is going to allow these into the store. Just seems like the kind of thing Apple won't allow. I understand Stanza or the Kindle app on the iphone because the iphone isn't billed as an ereader. I have a bad feeling these apps won't be welcomed into the apple store.

Yeah I know what you mean. I have to believe, though, that big-name companies like Amazon and B&N wouldn't publicly announce their apps if they didn't already know they'd be accepted.
Mind you, I guess that Google Voice app kind of proves me wrong...
Perhaps they'll compromise by letting them in, but gimp them so that you can't purchase books directly from the apps themselves. But then again how would you get them on the device ... hmm perhaps I'm just crazy.
Well, considering Apple is allowing people to use open-standard ePub files... I'm not sure they're going to force people to use their App Store for books.

Sync with iTunes or the Kindle app on your computer I suppose.
I would hope that Apple wouldn't do this. The iPad is not just an e-reader, if they allow other stores onto the device will they sell less books, but they will sell more iPads. I think the latter is more beneficial for Apple. The way it is looking at the moment the iPad will be the most versatile e-reader out there in terms of available sources of books.

Apps are already able to do in-app purchases and content additions. For example numerous games let you buy additional levels or content. eBook readers could work the same way. Additionally, the iPad is supposed to have a portion of its storage accessible as a standard USB mass storage device, so non-iTunes derived content can be loaded on that way (which is how stuff like the iWork apps are going to work for getting documents on and off the device)
Burninator is correct in his assertion that Apple is looking to move iPads, not eBooks - they allegedly only break even or make very modest profits on iTunes. Whether that's true or not, their motive in the iPod world is to move hardware, not content, with iTunes as the thing that makes the hardware so compelling.
I think if Apple wanted to be primarily a content seller, they would just buy Amazon or something.
That is simply awesome. I remember how excited I was to see all the free books on the Stanza app, but alas, I didn't like reading on such a small screen.
Purchased iBook store books will be drm'd like iTunes music used to be and tied to a certain number of devices. Publishing companies are just as fanatical about drm.

I guess I didn't phrase my question properly, especially since I was referencing the free books. I know I can get ePub books from many other sources like Google Books, and Project Gutenberg like you mentioned and I am fairly sure ePub books can be read on the iPad.
Can you use books bought (or free) on the iBook store on another medium? I just want to know if I need to hunt down 2 different copies to read one on my PC and one on an iPad, or if it works like my iTunes music where I can play it on my computer and my ipods and CD's as long as I follow the limits set by the DRM.
It isn't critical really now that I think about it, because most of the time I would want to be using the iPad anyway.

If you're asking whether or not you can read the books from iTunes directly on a PC or Mac, just like you would listen to music or watch a movie... I don't know for sure. I guess the real question is whether or not Apple considers the books as media files or applications.
If they're media files, I can see Apple adding the ability to open them up inside iTunes (PC or Mac). If they're applications, then no dice.
Number of sites starting to announce HTML5-readiness for video playback, in time for this weekend's launch. CBS, Fox, New York Times, etc etc etc. All confirmed to have gone "Flashless" for the iPad.
Also... Killer mockup app:

I think it'd be cool to have the iPad be the [Scrabble] board flat on a table, and have each person's "hand" of letters be on each person's iPod, iPhone, or even non-Apple handheld devices (probably not). They could all connect via bluetooth. You could select a letter on your iPhone, then press the square on the iPad where you wanted to put it, etc.
This could theoretically work on any tablet, of course.
Clearly I wasn't the only one to have this idea, because according to the NYTimes it is a reality. No non-Apple devices though, unsurprisingly.
Sorry for the likely dumb question.... are we going to be able to cycle through different apps with ease on the I-pad ? or will it be more like the Ipod/Iphone where it is a PIA to go from one App to another ?

Rumours say v4.0 of the OS will have multitasking so would presumably have a way to switch apps as well.
Maybe that's the holdup for multitasking, like cut/paste it's not the ability, it's coming up with an interface they like.
