Plus, this wasn't a Bill Cosby circa 2009 show. Earle described it as an X-Rated adult show. Your expectations should be adjusted accordingly.

Human rights tribunals are a joke.

Some drunken native guy got like $30k or something last year because a bar owner kicked him out of his bar. Even though the guy was drunk, disrupting the bar and harrassing his ex-wife who worked at the bar.

The Human Rights tribunal awarded him $$ because they determined that he was discriminated against because he was native.

The Province is reporting that Earle's lawyer got up and left part way through today's proceeding. Jim Millar, citing the Tribunal's refusing to rule on its jurisdiction before proceeding, just got up and left from what he considered an illegal proceeding. The Tribunal apparently decided it would rule on the jurisdiction question with all other issues after the hearing wrapped up.

Ridiculous. I have no familiarity with this court but how do they even have authority to hear arguments on the merits when the basic jurisdictional matter hasn't been answered?

How can you decide jurisdiction AFTER the proceedings? That makes absolutely no sense.

This whole case is a joke from beginning to end.

I was at a bar last year where a couple football players from either the hilltops or huskies were getting rowdy and stupid, swearing, being rude to servers and intimidating people by almost getting into fights. The owner is smiling and shaking his head as if to say "boys will be boys"

Ten minutes later a couple native guys start getting loud and swearing at each other and guess who gets kicked out. And of course everybody's shaking their heads, some muttering crap like "f'n indians" under their breath, oblivious to the irony.

Its like people couldn't even see what happened right in front of their face. These two morons who were waaaaay more out of hand are worshipped like saints because they play football and aren't immediately prejudged because their skin happens to be a lighter colour. Our society seriously disgusts me sometimes.

That's interesting because my post was about how Human Rights Commissions like this one are crap.

I love how comedians handle hecklers, this might be my favourite:

I saw Todd Glass go berzerk on a guy who was texting at his show at the Improv in Hollywood. It was so awkward, at first I thought it was a put on, but it went on way too long and wasn't funny. It made the audience totally uncomfortable. I couldn't wait to leave.

This is the proper way to handle a heckler.

The whole HRC is a joke.

Essentially the HRC is their so that if you don't have enough evidence to meet a real burdan of proof that the current court system has you can go through them.

As a defendant in an HRC hearing you basically have no rights. Read Ezra Levants crusade against them.

My favourite Human Rights Case is one where a fast food joint was found guilty of not providing reasonable accomodation for a person who couldn't wash their hands due to a skin condition.

Okay. Had the black man Michael Richards went off on registered a complaint with a Human Rights Council, would that make what Richards did right?

It's not a question of right and wrong, it's a question of whether or not you think the HRC should be stifling free speech, which is effectively what they are doing by going after this comedian.

And icecube's post was about a situation very similar to the one you described where people were discriminated against because they were native. It was a direct response to what you posted.

I'm not defending the complainants here, but why does anybody have to resort to slurs to call out assh0les? If these women were being assh0les, then call them assh0les.

This is EXACTLY analogous to a case where the hecklers are African-American and the comedian calls them n-ggers. There is zero, nada, no difference here. It's a case of a standup who has to resort to a slur when some more creative comeback would have worked and would have called out the heckler's BEHAVIOUR and not her IDENTITY.

Why try and have a clever exchange with someone being so blatantly rude though? It just invites more idiots to behave this way at your show. If someone is showing a complete lack of respect for you, why should you show any back? As for what he said, welcome to a comedy club. Comedians will look for any kind of flaw or difference and exploit hecklers(or people in the front row) for it. If you're bald, he'll probably rip on you for that. If you're fat, he'll rip on you for that. If you're some loud chick giving him the finger and making out with another girl, he'll rip on you for that. That's how it works. I have absolutely no problem with what he said given the setting and context. I'm actually embarassed for these girls that they're taking it to this level. They sound like complete and utter trash.

Bill Hicks. Man, that's what comedians should be like. Talk about real things. I'm so sick of hearing impressions of comedian's ethnic parents.

Well, this thread proves one point at least, that straight white men don't see a problem with what the comedian did.

My favourite part of this is that the complaintant is claiming that she is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder because of the incident. If she thinks that getting ripped on by a comedian is traumatic then she should just go ahead and institutionalize herself because there's no way she can possibly function in society.

Comedians aren't expected to be clever? That's news.

So just to be clear- it's fine for a standup to call a bunch of hecklers who happen to be brown "Pakis," to call a bunch who happen to be black "n!ggers," and who happen to be gay "f@ggots." This instead of trying to, you know, be an ENTERTAINER who is supposed to be funny and creative and who doesn't stoop to the level of a hatemonger who finds that calling the person out for an aspect of themselves that they have no control over is a fitting comeback to "you suck as a comic"? You're going to insult me for the colour of my skin or my sexual orientation, things I cannot change, when I insult you for being a terrible entertainer?
