Seems like the consensus is all schwarma/donair/gyro's are delicious?

Oh god no. There's some TERRIBLE places in town. There's that place on Macleod Trail near Heninger Toyota. AWFUL.

First, it's called Shawarma KNIGHT (not "knights") and it is absolutely not connected in any way to the former Shawarma King. That place (the one on 14 St SW) was shut down for weeks a couple of years ago for horrific health code violations, including what one health inspector called the worst mouse infestation he'd ever seen at a restaurant, with mouse droppings everywhere- kitchen, storage, DINING ROOM, on TABLES... they closed and sold. Shawarma Knight is incomparably better. No relation and no contest.

If you like the way they do shawarma/donair/falafel at Knight (they take a split-in-half round pita, put it on top of a square flat "sheet" pita, and wrap it all up so it's perfect and not messy), the same procedure is at the new Pharaoh's Diner, which replaced the Falafel King at 16th Ave/9 St SW. Pharaoh's also makes its falafel fresh, to order, only place I'm aware of in Calgary that does that. Also, Pharaoh makes a combo of house-made picked cabbage with bits of pickled beet mixed in- IMO this is even better than pickled turnip.

Incidentally and on that note, the person who claimed that you can't get pickled turnip west of Montreal is nuts- every shawarma place in Ottawa and Toronto does it, and there are at least a few in Calgary that to. Also, there is no contest between Calgary and Vancouver in the shawarma front- Calgary absolutely trounces Vancouver. I did get the worst donair I have ever tasted in Vancouver, though, a place near the courts centre (Hornby?) that uses pre-packaged donair meat, TWO SLICES, and a stale cold whole-wheat (to make it worse) pita. You'd never see this sort of garbage sold as donair in Calgary.

There's a great one in the mini mall at the corner of Anderson and Elbow. Forget the name though.
Its called Pita Stop, and I agree, its awesome. My favourite donair place in the city, so far.

I'm with you on Pita Stop, they are the best. Ali makes sure the quality stays up, even if the employees are there, instead of him and his wife.

The most delicious, juciest, sweetest donairs my sweet lips have ever suckeled.
PBC is the closest decent donair to me at work (the closest is on 4th ave across from Caesars but theirs is pretty sub-par). Once a summer I make a pilgrimage to Amin's Donair at 121, 7th ave. It's a super seedy part of town but if you want to have the option for a spicy donair, he's got some crazy sauces and toppings you don't see everywhere else.

I have done numerous taste tests with lots of family. Sammy's on 17 ave between 11st and 12 st SW is the best. It is super small, but makes the best donairs and shawarmas in the city, by far. A&A is not even close, in any way. Ask Sammy for his homemade hummus, it is the best I have ever had.

+1 for Jimmy's A&A. Best I have ever had. Drive across the city to get one. They need a new building.

You obviously haven't been going there is long as i have as they were at one point not that it really matters. a couple years back they were branded the same chain with the one on 17th ave se too.

both make good food regardless.

speaking of food code violations. like you say its the one on 14th street (the new sharwarma knight) that had them but the kensington sharwarma king also had some sort of violation. as you can see both were named sharwama king in 2006. not sure how the ownership structure has changed but the staff has certainly been there for a few years at the knight.

Another vote for The Donair Place in Shawnessey. As far as Sam's here in Kensington--the first time I had it, it was amazing. The last two times I've been there, I'm ended up sooo sick.

You gotta be kidding me?!?!?! Have you tried some of the other places recommended in this thread? My Donair is not only as generic as they get, they use that gross electric donair 'shaver', that grosses me out just thinking about it.

Yah dude I'm related to the owners of about half the places mentioned in this thread.

Why does a electric donair shaver gross you out? Personally I dont like the My Donair franchise but the one in Westbrooke is where I get my donair fix, but to each their own i guess.

I was at Shawarma King in Kensington the day they opened. I was at Shawarma King on 14th SW the day they opened.

There is not one single employee who worked at S King who now works at S Knight. They are completely separate businesses. S King owner is Lebanese, S Knight owners are Iraqi and the head cook guy (the one with curly black hair) is Afghani. He also speaks fluent Russian. So I'd say I know both places better than just about anybody in Calgary aside from the owners.

These are used at just about every Döner Kebap place in Germany, and for me it's a very good sign.

It's the closest donair place to my office, and every 6 months I get false hope that they've improved. Or I say to myself "Come on, it wasn't that bad was it?"

I also eat from McD's and KFC and I regret it every time too.

This is the place connected to the Westrn Pride car wash? I always wash my car there but never thought to go in and get some food.
