How was your Earth Hour?
I'm back online after Mrs. Goon and I spent the past hour chilling by candlelight. Looking around the neighbourhood, I don't think too many people were aware of the occasion.
It's strange that they don't coincide Earth Hour with Earth Day, but oh well.

I went outside to turn on my car and left it running for 1hr, went back inside and turned all the lights on and turned my oven to 500 for 1hr while I ran my washing machine empty, my drier and washer empty for the hour.
Also I had some kittens I killed.

Earth Hour seems like a pointless activity since it's all great we turn off the lights for an hour, but the surge when everyone turns them back on at the same time is far greater then the usage if everyone did what they were doing before for that same hour.
Powering up something like the whole Toronto skyline is going to use up any power saved during the hour.

I had the Canucks/Sharks game on all three of my TVs in my house, along with every single light turned on in my house. Also cooked up some popcorn in the microwave.

I didn't even know about it until I saw all the after the fact discussions online.
I guess it wasn't the "in" thing to do this year. Last year I was being bombarded with facebook requests/invites and also by tv news.
This year... notta.

I did have the lights out in the house. Of course it was all part of the act of trying to trick the one month old into falling asleep after his 8:00 feeding.

In 2008 Calgary actually used more electricity during earth hour than the average for the same time on any given day.

Why don't they just do this in the middle of summer? Say July or so when its less likely to be cold and therefore you aren't in a huddled mass freezing and when it's actually still light enough to function.
Sitting around in the dark and fumbling my way through the house smacking into doors and stuff isn't really my idea of an exciting Saturday night.

My Earth Hour was pretty good.
One tv set up showing boxing, the other hooked up playing tetris on the NES.
Laptop hooked up to external speakers playing some tunes on random.
Drinking some beer.
Really I'm the worst environmentalist. In my apt we don't have to pay for water, electricity, or heat. I never turn off any lights except for my bedroom when I go to bed. I always have the thermostat off, but for some reason my apt is always a steady 26 (whole building is). I don't drive a huge SUV or truck, but a car that is a v6 is definitely not the best for gas.

I turned on every light on the mainfloor and started my laundry while keeping the TV going.

Having the Battle of Alberta in Calgary on that day made it hard to cut back electricity.

Yeah, we felt a bit embarrassed about that so we decided to participate this year. It was nice to be one with the people of the planet, and hey, disconnecting felt great. We should actually do this more often.

Turned on every light in the house, then I turned on my headlights. Then I broke into my neighbours houses and turned on their lights.
Then I ate their leftover pizza and peed on their couch.
the last part has nothing to do with the environment, but those people really piss me off.

Turned all the lights off and promptly fell asleep.
It's a neat tradition, though.

I wonder about the carbon footprint of all the advertising, seems pointless.
