fanin80: the ipad decision chart is funny. for anyone that knows the background of the nhl suspension chart, to see this is just a funny parody. sure it pokes fun at stereotypes, but thats one of the most used forms of comedy. the fact that you instantly get defensive and hate it is IMO one of the reasons many people assume you are indeed a 'fanboi' and make the comment (seriously or jokingly) all the time.
i can understand how easy it is to get defensive on the topic. i often get painted into corners on this board regarding the heat and the red wings. it can be easy to take jokes too seriously, defend myself way too much, and just be too serious in general.
i haven't read 75% of the posts in this thread, so maybe it got ugly and you have every right to be defensive, but just remember that when you have to defend yourself from the fanboi accusations.
|
Yeah I hear ya. It's gotten to the point now where I get it from so many different people and in pretty much every thread I make, that there's just no way for me to know when someone's joking or not. Also, I probably would have thought that flowchart was funny a year and a half ago, but it's just too much all the time. It's like anything else that gets constantly repeated over and over and over... eventually even the small things will piss you off.
Of course it just becomes an endless circle though. Probably the only solution is to just stop talking about Apple. The thing that has always kind of got under my skin, though, is how everyone seems to think that it's perfectly ok for people to rag on every single Apple thread that ever gets created. If a Canuck or Oiler fan ever tried to do in a Flames thread what PC guys do in Apple threads here, they'd be suspended in a heartbeat.
I mean, maybe I do get rattled too easily... but yeesh. Go through some of the Apple threads I've made over the years and tell me how many of these arguments are started by me. I'm willing to bet not many. You might think they're all me, just because I'm in every one of them... but I'm usually just the guy who wanted to have a simple conversation about Apple stock prices, or their Board of Directors or an award Steve Jobs won, or something else that shouldn't be that big of a deal.
Anyway, I know I keep saying this... but, I'm honestly not like this in the real world. I'm a really easy-going guy. Mind you, I also don't have people telling me that I'm a " fanboy who doesn't like to make my own decisions and who only buys overpriced, useless crap because I think it makes me look cool and feel special" six times a day, either.
Edit: I kind of took the long way around, but the point I'm trying to make is that it happens so often from so many people now, that my first reaction is to be suspicious. Right or wrong, that's just the way it is. I may have brought some (or even most) of it on myself with the way I used to defend Apple for everything back in the beginning... but I think some other people should take responsibility for the fact that I even had to defend them instead of just being free to have a simple discussion without the constant "you suck because you use Apple" comments.

My dream system would be a tablet like this that open platform so I could install anything I wanted on it. I would also want the touchscreen to be as sensitive as a professional wacom drawing tablet.
Then I would just read comic books in bed with it.

That's just the image that Apple fans have these days, cultivated by them, popular culture, and Apple marketing. They're the only tech company that spends so much time and money marketing their product as hip and trendy. There is going to be backlash.
The Calgarypuck tech forum also seems to be more full of PC users or IT professionals and gamers, etc. who would naturally gravitate toward the PC. Maybe if this were art/design forum you'd have more Apple users.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. I'm a relatively new Apple convert who never got into the Apple vs PC thing until I bought my first Apple, and tried to talk about it and got slammed by some obvious Apple vs PC war vets.
Look man, I'm just a guy who was excited about a new product and wanted to have some conversations and get some tips, etc about it. If you knew me outside of this board, you would know that I am the farthest thing from your version of a typical Apple user as it gets.
I'm just a geek, man. I don't pop my collar or sip imported beers and talk about my golf swing and how much snow there is on some exclusive ski mountain. I just want to have conversations with some people about some things that I think are pretty neat. I don't understand why I have to defend myself while I'm having those conversations.
Edit: Just saw your edit. I think there are more Apple users here than you probably realize. It's just not all of them are willing to subject themselves to some of the crap they see they'd have to go through to talk about it here. Also, I am one of those IT professionals you mentioned. I'm also a PC user.

15% of hits to the site are from Mac users.
The weird thing is we had 28 hits from AmigaOS users, and 3 from a Dreamcast??

As I have said in various threads and perhaps earlier in this one, if I jumped into the Jays thread and said that baseball sucks and baseball fans suck, I'd be being an a-hole.
However, if I jump into an iPad thread and say that Apple sucks and Apple users suck, I'm being a funny guy and those that take offence lack a sense of humour.

If you went into a Jays thread and said "I don't think the Jays are going to be good this year because x and y" I don't think that would be inappropriate. If you just came in and said "they suck," obviously that's lame. However, how many people in this thread have done that about Apple, without laying out their reasons for disliking it?

Oh, the first 10 pages of this thread were about the iPads limitations and the market for it. Which was an interesting and useful conversation. And then it went off the rails with iProduct images and the like. Which happens in every Apple-related thread.
Really, you think if I went into the Blue Jays thread and posted about why I thought baseball sucks and why baseball fans suck and laid out my reasons for disliking them, that would be welcome with open arms?

That's not the same though. That'd be like coming in here and saying, without irony, that you hate computers. I think there's still good conversation in here, and just because a few joke images bother the most hardcore mac defenders doesn't change that. I enjoy a good BSOD joke, after all...

You could probably put Linux on a potato if you you were crazy enough to. Wait, we are talking about Linux freaks here, I am going to bet someone already has!

That's me ... I've been using Macs for over 20 years, and I long ago got fed up with the penis measuring that goes on in the typical Mac vs PC debates. I love my Mac and will always use a Mac. That's really all I care about. When anyone asks me nowadays why and whether I recommend that they switch I just tell them to stick with PCs because that's what most of their friends probably use so they can pirate more software and beg more tech support favours from their PC friends than they'll ever get for a Mac. It also lets me off the hook for "friendly" tech support. I love telling my PC friends who come to me for help that "I don't do Windows".

I don't personally have anything problem with Apple users but both camps like to give the other grief and take some perverse pleasure out of it for some reason.
My problem is entirely the lack of freedom I feel with Apple, it's the lack of choice of software and frustration of the bland and corporate feeling of the grey interface (Windows isn't corporate anymore, it's just cheesy and tacky ugly). My dream job would be some kind of GUI designer. I wouldn't know where to start though.

The main reason I encourage people to stick with/use Windows is that the Apple market share has risen from 10% to 15% ... that's big enough. Big enough for Apple to run profitably and big enough for most software developers to develop Mac versions of their programs. If the Apple market share gets any bigger I fear I might have to actually start screening for viruses. I know, I should anyway because they do exist. For the most part though Mac viruses are pretty much myth in my experience. In over 20 years of using Apples I've had one virus ... and it came from a Mac magazine demo disc. In that time I've never used anti-virus software. That reason alone justifies using an Apple for me. That and they come up with really cool innovations.
