no they haven`t said yet
I think its a job someone told Desmond to do though, remember in his episode a few years ago when he was told he was special and he could travel in time and change things
I think thats what he was doing

What could be the greatest Lost episode to date is airing tonight. We finally get to learn about Richard, why he never ages, what he's doing on the island, and the island's history... Can't wait!

Best episode in many, many seasons.

I'm ok with the good vs evil angle. Just don't get into the devil / jeebus angle, that'll just plain piss me off. Overall my favourite episode since the first Hurley episode. Definitely. Sure didn't paint Jacob in the same saviour light as before. Left some doors open for who was truly the good one, cork analogy notwithstanding.

But its not the devil and Jesus.
Man in black might represent the devil, but I think he's a trapped demon. Something like Leviathon or Legion, and it makes sense based on the statement that Jacob took his body. I don't think you can take the devils body because I believe that the devil would be like the energy trapped under the Island.
I doubt that Jacob is Jesus, maybe one of the ArchAngels like Michael. Even though we do have a resurrection angle with Hurley.
I keep going back to thinking that Smokey/Locke is like the Randall Flagg character from the stand or the man in black in the dark tower. He's not outwardly forcing these people to do dark deeds, but he believes that there is evil in all men and he just needs to find the button that brings it out.
At the end of the day, this is a game designed to keep the smoke man busy and distracted while he's trapped on the Island. Jacob keeps bringing people to the Island to play the game. but as we saw the balance was tipped thanks to Ben and Jacob was killed, so now he does need someone to ascend to his place to keep the Island intact and the evil or the energy under the Island contained.

What bugs me from these last few episodes is the "magic knife". Oh, "Stab him with it, don't let him talk or it's too late". This has been said to apply to both Jacob and Smokey. But Jacob was merc'd by Linus with a plain old stabby knife, not the special one. How does that all fit in?

I thought about that. And maybe thats why Jacob can still talk to Hurley, because he's not all the way dead. Maybe if he stabbed him with the actual knife, Jacob wouldn't be able to communicate.
As far as Locke monster not dying, he didn't have a body, he's a smoke monster illusion, so the knife wouldn't have any effect.
But it was interesting that both sides didn't want to give their enemy the chance to talk. They don't want the chance of free will based on what Jacob or Smokey say.

No, Jacob's toast. Hurley talks to dead people, everyone he's spoken with is 100% dead. This is why the knife thing intrigues me, seems somewhat ceremonic, but a ceremony that is destined to fail. Well, 7 episodes left, suppose these questions should be answered soon. Just don't pull a Sopranos on me LOST, or I will have to murder JJ Abrams.

I don't think we learned anything new in that episode. I was unimpressed. We are still left with smokey trying to escape and Jacob keeping him contained.

For sure. Great episode, my only VERY MINOR complaint is that I wish Richard's story had begun earlier than 1867, but meh.
I felt satisfied with that episode, which is rare with this show.
