Ironic description for a walmart thread. Fits into a stereotype of its own.

...That was the joke - I'm white, so I can make white people stereotype jokes

A guy from who used to play on my soccer team nicknamed himself "Black Mamba". He was originally from Angola. We were obliged to play along, although sometimes we abbreviated it to simply "Mamba".
Actually, come to think of it, I was one of only a few token white guys on the team. It seems that everyone was able to poke fun (and, of course, receive it) at themselves and others about our differences. But that's in a team environment. I wouldn't repeat some of what was said here, on the street, or in Wal-Mart.

You know what I always find funny about racism? When you hang out with lots of people from different races, it feels like white people are generally less racist than most, yet it feels like white people get labeled racist the quickest.
...and I've had lots of minority friends/co-workers etc, agree that they feel that's case, as well.

Agreed...
I also feel that the media perpetuates racism more than actual people do....

I have two kids from Haiti. My daughter just randomly said yesterday that she doesn't like kids calling her black. I asked why. She said it is inaccurate, she is more brown than black. So I asked if she would call me pink then...ya, she did later on. I am sure she will be correcting people at school today. (Hey, don't call me black, I'm brown...pinky). My personal experience is that most people don't get their knickers in a twist about how you choose to identify them (eg. black, brown, African-Canadian, etc.), but what raises ire is when you use a label that has had negative historical connotations or circumstances (eg. negro, coloured, etc.). But that is just my experience, yours may be different.

I don't have any scientific study backing me up either but let's look at racialy mixed couples. 90% of mixed couples I've seen in my life (and I lived in London for a while and that's about as multicultural as it gets) were white/asian, white/black, white/arab etc. How often do you see asian/black, asian/arab or black/indian couples?
PS Never been to Canada so maybe it's different there?

You know, redneck is a fine example here. The term began as a description for labourers who worked hard. They were out working in the sun so long that their neck was permanently red. A redneck was an honest, hard-working individual. Somewhere along the way, it got a negative connotation and now some people...except Mickey...take it as an insult.

"A redneck was an honest, hard-working individual".........this is what I identify myself with.....but alot of folks (maybe they are mostly American?) link the term "redneck" with racism.....which isn't entirely fair.
